BREAKING NEWS: Passenger jet carrying hundreds crash lands at San Francisco airport Preliminary Information FAA: Boeing 777 crashes at San Francisco International Airport (CNN) -- A Boeing 777 operated by Asiana Airlines crashed while landing Saturday at San Francisco International Airport, an FAA spokesman told CNN. Video from the scene posted on YouTube showed dark gray smoke rising from the plane, which appeared to be upright. Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 Crashes in San Francisco Airport Evacuation slides could be seen extending from one side of the aircraft, from which there was no apparent smoke. The airport is located about 12 miles south of downtown San Francisco. Asiana Airlines is one of South Korea's two major airlines, the other being Korean Air. CNN's Dana Bash, who was heading to the airport at the time of the crash, said she noticed smoke emanating from the runway. She said she had not noticed any arrivals or departures since the crash. The Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 flight, reportedly flying in from Seoul, South Korea, was pictured on the runway badly damaged with a plume of smoke rising from the damaged fuselage. Passengers were seen being evacuated on emergency slides. A plane of that size can carry between 314 and 451 passengers and it is not yet clear if any have been injured. Several tourists and airport staff witnessed the accident and spoke of their horror. Onlookers said much of the tail came off in the crash landing while others reported seeing the plane flipping upside down as it spun across the concourse. Danielle Wells tweeted: 'I just saw a plane crash start to finish. I can't stop crying, I can't believe this.' Others reported emergency slides were activated and several passengers were seen using them to escape the wreck. A huge smoke cloud cloud be seen gushing from where the plane went down. The plane departed Incheon airport near South Korea's capital around 12 hours ago. It was due to land at 9.45am on the West Coast. One witness told CNN that there didn't seem to be any preparations for a crash landing before the plane came in suggesting it was an issue that only emerged on landing. Photos and videos from the accident scene suggest the tail separated and a fire had erupted. Occupants were seen evacuating from the airplane.
