(more) The accident happened at about 4 p.m. local time on Thursday when an Airbus A310 belonging to Services Air attempted to land at an airport in the city of Mbuji-Mayi and overshot the runway, causing it to plow through a residential area near the airport and striking several homes. Mbuji-Mayi, which is the capital of Kasai-Oriental province, is located in the country's south-central region and is about 942 kilometers (585 miles) southeast of the capital Kinshasa. Kasai-Oriental Governor Ngoyi Kasanji told the AFP news agency that at least seven people had been killed in the crash-landing, all of whom lived in homes near the airport. The four crew members who were on board the cargo plane escaped without injury. A source told Radio Okapi that the accident followed two failed landing attempts, after which the aircraft landed in the middle of the runway and was unable to stop in time. As a result, the plane overshot the runway and came to a stop about 500 meters (546 yards) beyond the end of the runway. http://bnonews.com/news/index.php/news/id3116 ************* Status: Preliminary Date: Thursday 24 December 2015 Time: ca 17:00 Type: Airbus A310-304F Operator: Services Air Registration: 9Q-CVH C/n / msn: 413 First flight: 1986-03-07 (29 years 10 months) Engines: 2 General Electric CF6-80C2A2 Crew: Fatalities: 0 / Occupants: 4 Passengers: Fatalities: 0 / Occupants: 0 Total: Fatalities: 0 / Occupants: 4 Ground casualties: Fatalities: 8 Airplane damage: Unknown Location: Mbuji-Mayi Airport (MJM) ( Congo (Democratic Republic)) Phase: Landing (LDG) Nature: Cargo Departure airport: Lubumbashi-Luano (FBM/FZQA), Congo (Democratic Republic) Destination airport: Mbuji-Mayi Airport (MJM/FZWA), Congo (Democratic Republic) Narrative: The Airbus A310 cargo plane suffered a runway excursion after landing at Mbuji-Mayi Airport (MJM), Democratic Republic of the Congo. The aircraft landed on runway 17 but failed to stop on the remaining runway. It continued off the runway and impacted several houses, killing at least eight persons on the ground. Houses are located 300 m past the end of the paved surface of runway 17, on the extended runway centreline. The accident happened after a period of heavy rainfall. On August 19, 2015, a Korongo Airlines Boeing 737-300 sustained serious damage when loose runway tarmac slabs hit the stabilizers during takeoff from Mbuji-Mayi. Congo Airways suspensed all of its flights to Mbuji-Mayi as of on December 8 until further notice due to the degradation of the airport's runway. The Congolese authorities, the RVA (Régie des voies aériennes), inspected the runway on December 20 and concluded it was indeed old but considered it still "practicable". MZWThe airport's runway 17/35 is 2000 m (6558 ft) long. http://www.aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20151224-1 Back to Top Two Seriously Hurt in Mississippi Plane Crash-Landing Two passengers were seriously hurt when a small plane crash-landed next to a home in northern Mississippi Thursday morning, according to local NBC affiliate WTVA. The UK government suspended flights to the Red Sea resort in November after the suspected bombing of a Russian passenger jet killed 224 people. So-called Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the attack. Over 16,000 Britons stranded in the area were brought home on a series of rescue flights amid increased security. No flights have operated between the UK and Sharm el-Sheikh since 17 November, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all but essential travel using the resort's airport. British Airways has said it will not operate flights to the Egyptian resort until after 13 February at the earliest, while Monarch services are currently suspended up to 24 January. EasyJet has stopped services until 29 February, while Thomson and Thomas Cook this week both extended their suspension of services until 23 March. Security checks The Association of British Travel Agents has said the decision about whether to use Sharm el-Sheikh airport is being made by the UK authorities rather than the airlines. Travel analyst Bob Atkinson, from Travel Supermarket, said the length of the suspension suggested that security issues at the airport were proving difficult to solve. He said services would resume "at some point", but added: "The longer it goes on makes you think, 'Why are they delaying it so long if it's as simple as making sure security checks are in place?'" But the Egyptian authorities would be doing "everything possible within their powers" to give the UK confidence about the safety of its citizens, so as not to lose out on tourist trade, he added. On Tuesday, the Egyptian government announced it had hired global risk and security consultancy firm Control Risks to conduct a review of airports across the country. The announcement was welcomed by British ambassador to Egypt, John Casson, who said he hoped flights would resume "as soon as possible". "Britain was the first to raise security concerns about Sharm airport and Britain wants to be the first to restart flights, so that tourism can lead the revival of Egypt's economy," he said. The crash on 31 October involved an Airbus A321, operated by the Russian airline Kogalymavia, which had taken off from Sharm el-Sheikh for St Petersburg, but crashed into the Sinai desert killing everybody on board. UK investigators believe the crash was caused by a bomb put in the hold of the plane prior to take-off. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35173927 Back to Top Back to Top Upcoming Events: 2016 DTI SMS/QA Symposium January 3, 4, & 5 2016 Disney World, FL 1-866-870-5490 www.dtiatlanta.com 6th European Business Aviation Safety Conference 2016 February 23-24, 2016 Frankfurt, Germany www.ebascon.eu 2016 Air Charter Safety Symposium | Safety: A Small Investment for a Rich Future March 8-9, 2016 | NTSB Training Center | Ashburn, VA http://www.acsf.aero/events/acsf-symposium/ CHC Safety & Quality Summit | Back to Basics: Prioritizing Safety in a Challenging Economy April 4-6, 2016 Vancouver, BC www.chcsafetyqualitysummit.com BARS Auditor Training Washington, DC Tuesday-Thursday 5-7 April http://flightsafety.org/bars/auditor-training Back to Top JOBS AVAILABLE: Manager Flight Operation FedEx Express https://www.appone.com/MainInfoReq.asp?R_ID=1186411 Deputy Director of Flight Operations & Technical Services Helicopter Association International https://www.rotor.org/AboutHAI/Employment.aspx Curt Lewis
