The company already holds approvals to service models from Cessna, Dassault, Hawker and Gulfstream. "We now have the ability to perform inspections and repairs on the entire Global series, which is critical if you plan to serve the ultra-long-range segment," noted John Langschultz, the company's vice president of maintenance. "As business jets continue to get larger and the market for large- cabin aircraft continues to grow, we must expand our service offerings to remain competitive." The company also just announced another addition to its Teterboro Airport facility, with the acquisition of the former AIG hangar complex. It includes a 22,000-sq-ft hangar, along with an additional 11,500 sq ft of office and support space. "This hangar and additional ramp space will afford us greater flexibility with our customers, especially during gridlock periods when our capacity is challenged," said company president Steve Chandoha. "Now we have more options to fuel, park and hangar aircraft." In addition, Meridian is constructing a 40,000-sq-ft hangar with 10,000 sq ft of office space at Teterboro. Slated for completion by year-end, it replaces an obsolete 20,000-sq-ft 1950s-era structure. http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2017-03-22/meridian-gets-global- family-maintenance-approval Back to Top Flying high: ComAv launches program to connect students with aviation jobs VICTORVILLE - High school and college students across the High Desert will be given a hands-on opportunity and educational experience for those interested in entering the aviation field thanks to ComAv. The Victorville-based aviation leasing and maintenance company has teamed with local high schools and Victor Valley College to forge a partnership known as "Aviation Pathways" that gears students for careers in aviation. The aim is to address the continual challenge of providing jobs for the High Desert workforce by partnering with education to create a more direct path to this growing local industry. "With this program, we're hoping to give students who may be unsure of their future career an idea of what they want to do after high school," said Don Dombrowski, ComAv's director of quality and a teacher for VVC's aviation program. "Some kids may find something they are interested in wanting to pursue once they are exposed to it. So the idea is to hopefully expose them to this business that will not only benefit them, but educators as well." The program is said to be very inclusive, introducing the aviation industry to the local community, high school and college students and the participants' parents and family members. A core part of "Aviation Pathways" will be to develop apprenticeship programs through ComAv for high school and college students, but ComAv also sees it expanding to include other aviation services companies at Southern California Logistics Airport (SCLA). ComAv's CEO and Founder Craig Garrick and other team members had their first meeting with education stakeholders in January, where representatives from VVC, Excelsior Charter School, Victorville High School, Serrano High School and The Lewis Center discussed ways they could combine to make it easier for Victor Valley and other students to obtain aviation jobs locally. "I headquartered ComAv in the Victor Valley 19 years ago and I'm committed to seeing it thrive," Garrick said. "One of the challenges our company faces though is hiring qualified local talent, especially as we look to expand and fill over a hundred new jobs in the next year." ComAv and the partnership also will be looking to participate in local community career-building events and collaborate with local schools. Furthermore, interaction with area educators will provide a better understanding of their interests and needs, leading to the development of aviation-based educational programs while providing aviation field expertise. "The aviation industry is vast and is growing tremendously in our own community," Dombrowski said. "While the majority of our employees are local residents, we still find ourselves having to recruit outside of the High Desert to find qualified staffing." According to Garrick, the goal is to "encourage more local students and community members to choose an aviation-based career path." "We want to recruit locally as our staffing requirements increase," he said. "We've found that we are not only helping our own community by providing jobs, but recruiting locally provides our company with a longer term and loyal employee base. We pride ourselves as a company with low employee turnover, which can be unusual for an aviation-based company." Educators interested in becoming involved with "Aviation Pathways" are urged to send an email to aviationpathways@comav.com for more information. http://www.vvdailypress.com/news/20170321/flying-high-comav-launches-program-to-connect- students-with-aviation-jobs Back to Top HAITEC Opens New Line Maintenance Station in FRA Hahn Airport, March 21, 2017. The Portland-based aviation firm, best known for its S-64 aircranes and helitankers, houses its manufacturing, maintenance, research and development operations in Jackson County, where more than 700 employees work. Judge Harlin D. Hale of the Northern District of Texas bankruptcy court in Dallas confirmed the plan less than five months after Erickson entered court protection in November, listing $561 million in debt. The company went public in 2012 and acquired Evergreen Helicopters and Air Amazonia in 2013, which left Erickson with $355 million in debt just as the global oil-and-gas market was collapsing. "For all intents and purposes this gives us clear path to emerge from bankruptcy in the next couple of weeks," Erickson president and CEO Jeff Roberts said in a telephone interview Wednesday from Dallas. Roberts, CFO David Lancelot, and commercial aviation vice president Andy Mills were approved as board members for the reconstituted privately held company. Roberts said the board may eventually grow to seven members, including some independent directors. "We have a good vetting process in place to help guide our business in a positive fashion," Roberts said. Under the plan, Erickson's pre-bankruptcy debt will be reduced by more than $400 million. Erickson said it obtained commitments to borrow up to $150 million from a consortium led by MidCap Financial Trust; reached an agreement on noncash repayment of $69.8 million in financing obtained during the bankruptcy; and secured a backstopped $20 million rights offering. Roberts said the structural changes will reinforce the direction the company has moved to leverage its helicopter fleet's unique capabilities. "There's cautious enthusiasm about what we're hearing out of Washington," Roberts said. "I don't know what will happen, but the words sound good." Roberts is also optimistic about hefty defense spending increases planned by the Trump Administration. "There's a lot of conversation about expeditionary aviation being a focus of new defense spending," he said. "It's way too early to tell if it manifests itself, but the words are good." Earlier this month, Erickson announced it is building a S-64 Aircrane for Korea Forest Service, its first such order in eight years. It also announced new service contracts in South America and Africa. "It's astonishing how supportive our customers and prospects have been through the process," Roberts said. "It's enabled us to secure new business during restructuring. As we emerge, any and all concerns they may have will go away." Lancelot attributed the company's swift movement through reorganization to the support of its debtholders and the entities leasing their aircraft. "The financial impact of this approved plan is very positive and allows us to be far more strategic to compete in the competitive landscape," Lancelot said. http://www.mailtribune.com/news/20170322/court-approves-erickson-bankruptcy-plan Back to Top GA Groups Highlight ATC Reform Concerns to Lawmakers Sixteen aviation associations wrote U.S. House and Senate leaders yesterday to reiterate their concerns about the push to create a user-funded, independent air traffic control organization and to encourage lawmakers to provide adequate time for review of any such proposal that may surface. The associations, largely representing business and general aviation interests, told the respective leaders of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and Senate Commerce Committee, "For over a year, some big airlines have pushed for a new governance and funding model for our nation's aviation system, based on systems in other parts of the world. The general aviation community has very real and long-standing concerns, which include but are not limited to user fees." These concerns stem from the effect foreign systems have had on general aviation, the associations said, adding, "It is worth noting that the majority of all general aviation in the world today takes place in the U.S.Working with Congress, aviation stakeholders have been able to ensure that our system operates for the public benefit, providing access for all stakeholders to airports, heliports and airspace, and encouraging competition and innovation." The letters from the associations come as Congress begins to craft a long-term FAA reauthorization proposal that is widely expected to include an effort to reform the U.S. ATC system. An airline- backed independent ATCsystem received a boost from the new Trump Administration, which included the proposal-but provided no detail-in its first budget. Congress is facing a September 30 deadline to either adopt a long-term FAAreauthorization bill or a short-term extension. "We respectfully request that you provide ample opportunity for all stakeholders and citizens to carefully review, analyze and debate any proposed legislation changing the governance and funding for air traffic control," the associations added. Signing the letters were the Air Care Alliance, AEA, AOPA, Citation Jet Pilots, Commemorative Air Force, EAA, GAMA, HAI, International Council of Air Shows, National Agricultural Aviation Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, NATA, NBAA, Recreational Aviation Foundation, U.S. Parachute Association and Veterans Airlift Command. http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2017-03-22/ga-groups-highlight-atc- reform-concerns-lawmakers Back to Top Garuda Indonesia maintaining positive performance National airline PT Garuda Indonesia and its subsidiaries maintained positive performance throughout 2016 with a net profit of US$9.36 Mil, or the equivalent of IDR 124.5 Bil (exchange rate IDR 13.300 per US$), while carrying a total of 35 Mil passengers on both Garuda Indonesia and Citilink Indonesia. The positive achievement was detailed in the Group's analyst meeting which took place today at Garuda Indonesia headquarters in Cengkareng, and was attended by Garuda Indonesia directors and all the directors of the subsidiaries. The subsidiaries in attendance were Citilink Indonesia, Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF-AeroAsia), Aerowisata, Sabre, Asyst and Gapura. "As we know, the trend in growth for the world aviation industry, especially for the Asia-Pacific region, has been under pressure for the last five years, especially as a result of the global economic slowdown that has affected the purchasing power of people, but the Garuda Indonesia Group can still maintain its positive performance," explained President Director of Garuda Indonesia, M. Arif Wibowo to reporters at the occasion. Referring to the performance review of the Asia Pacific aviation industry released by the passenger yield of the Asia Pacific aviation industry in the past five years has experienced a significant downward trend, from USC 9.6/km in 2012 to USC 6.2/km in 2016. However, the passenger traffic recorded showed an increasing trend from 511.6 Mil passengers in 2012 to 632.8 Mil passengers in 2016. "The study indicates that despite showing an increase in passenger traffic in the aviation industry in the Asia Pacific region, there has actually been a decreased yield because most carriers have been participating in the expansion of their business development strategy," he said. "Through its long-term business strategy, "Sky Beyond", the Garuda Indonesia Group was able to maintain profitability with various policies, ranging from the company's efficiency program, proportional consolidation of production capacity, to strengthening the service line and the company's operations. In addition, the company also continued to grow expansively to maintain positive margins and recorded a total consolidated revenue of US$3.86 Bil," added Arif. Entering the competitive aviation industry in 2017, Garuda Indonesia will strengthen a number of commercial sectors and commerce by accelerating the development of service-based IT by optimizing customer loyalty programs to strengthen the device platform of e-commerce, so that the company can deliver a seamless service to all passengers. Throughout 2016, the frequency of Garuda Indonesia flights also rose 9.89% to 274.969 from a total of 249.974 flights in 2015. The increase in flight frequency is in line with the company's efforts to expand its network in both the domestic and international market. "2016 was a year of investment for the company, considering that we maximized the utilization of wide body aircraft for the expansion of international routes in the middle to long haul sector. In the future, we project that cycle fleet restructuring will next be carried out in 2019," said Arif. Following the development of the cargo business, Garuda Indonesia managed to increase total cargo to 415.824 tons, an increase of 18.22% from 2015, when the total reached 351.724 tons. The overall amount of revenue in the cargo market in 2016 was recorded at US$219.15 Mil, an increase of 16.65% compared to the US$187.87 Mil booked in 2015. "The growth in Garuda Indonesia's cargo markets was carried out by optimizing cargo space, which included maximizing the commodities that have high yields - including building synergies with other sectors of the logistics industry in maximizing the reach and service of Garuda air cargo products until reaching aspects of the door to door services. In the future, we will also increase the capacity of the cargo business through the existing routes of international flights we serve," said Arif. Related to the situation of the aviation industry in the Asia-Pacific region which is experiencing intense competition and has affected both domestic and international flights, the position of Garuda Indonesia at this time recorded a market share of 41.71% in the domestic market and 26.93% for the market share of international markets. Meanwhile, the Garuda Indonesia Group also managed to record an increase in scores of other income consisting of components of ancillary revenue, income sector strategic business unit (SBU), to other subsidiaries with the achievements of the sector amounted to US$392 Mil, an increase of 13.7% compared to the 2015 total of US$344.6 Mil. Regarding operational performance in terms of On Time Performance (OTP) in 2016, Garuda reached 89.51%, up from 88% the previous year, which was achieved despite the challenging flight operations due to infrastructure development such as the domestic services migration to the new Terminal 3 at Soekarno-Hatta to weather factors, or force majeure. Meanwhile, the average occupancy rate throughout 2016 was 73.1% for Garuda Indonesia and 76.8% for Citilink. In line with the ongoing network expansion program, during 2016, Garuda Indonesia opened a number of exciting new flight destinations like Medina, Mumbai, and several other domestic destinations such as Sintang, Silangit, Nabire and Maumere. By the end of 2016, Garuda Indonesia was serving flights to and from a total of 19 international destinations and 64 domestic destinations. During 2016, the Garuda Indonesia Group also focused on additional flight capacity as part of the revitalization program development by bringing 17 aircraft fleet, which consisted of four ATR 72- 600 aircraft, four A330-300s, one B777-300ER aircraft and eight A330 -200. Thus, by the end of 2016, the Garuda Indonesia Group operates 196 aircraft with an average aircraft age of 4.6 years. Facing the increasingly competitive projections of the global aviation industry, Garuda Indonesia has sustained and continues to even strengthen its services by applying the concept of "Excellent Indonesian Hospitality" which is a service philosophy to promote the famous Indonesia hospitality. The formula has produced remarkable results, the Garuda Indonesia cabin crew was awarded "The World's Best Cabin Staff" from Skytrax (agency independent aviation in London) three times in a row (a hat-trick) from 2014 to 2016. http://www.eturbonews.com/78078/garuda-indonesia-maintaining-positive-performance Back to Top NATO Conducts DVE Trials with Ruag Integrated Solutions Ruag Aviation integrated pilot assistance and helicopter safety solution was on board a Swiss Air Force Airbus Helicopters EC635 as it performed trials for NATO, Ruag says. "Our airplane is ready now," Rob Weiss, Lockheed Martin executive vice president, declared March 21 as the proposal deadline neared for the Air Force's T-X advanced pilot training requirement. The service plans to award a contract this year for engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) and production of 350 new jets and ground-based training systems, an estimated $16.3 billion acquisition. "We believe we've made the right choice with an off-the-shelf aircraft that meets all the requirements at very little risk to EMD," Weiss added. Lockheed Martin has two production-representative T-50As that it started flying last summer from a facility in Greenville, South Carolina. The jets have completed all pre-EMD flight test points for maneuverability, sustained-G and high angle of attack, Weiss said during the manufacturer's annual media day. T-X proposals are due to the Air Force by March 30, but bidders have until late June to present flight-test data with time-stamped video and audio, he explained. The service plans to attain initial operational capability of a new jet trainer for its fifth-generation F- 22 and F-35A fighters by Fiscal Year 2024, but Lockheed Martin could deliver the T-50A in 2022 if required, Weiss said. That timeframe would beat a clean-sheet design-a reference to the BTX jet that Boeing rolled out in September-by up to six years, he asserted, estimating that it would take until 2028 for a new design to complete the EMD phase and start production. During that time, the Air Force would spend an additional $1 billion to operate and maintain the aging Northrop T-38 Talon, he said. Northrop Grumman also developed a clean-sheet design for the T-X requirement, but last month publicly withdrew from the competition, which has "evolved into a low-price shootout," Weiss said. Northrop Grumman's withdrawal left Boeing's jet and the T-100 variant of the twin-engine Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master offered by Italy's Leonardo and its U.S. subsidiary DRS Technologies as other leading contenders. Lockheed Martin has already assembled and reassembled the T-50A-a variant of the Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 Golden Eagle-and installed a ground-based training system in Greenville. Its EMDphase would be "risk-free," said Weiss, who also serves as general manager of Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works advanced development programs unit. Unlike previous versions of the T-50, which KAI produces for the South Korean air force, the T-50A has an in-flight refueling receptacle and an advanced cockpit with a single, large-screen display. Lockheed Martin may also enter the T-50A in the Air Force's OA-X evaluation of light attack aircraft, Weiss said. On March 17, the service issued an invitation to participate in a demonstration that will take place at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Responses are due back to the service by April 7. http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2017-03-22/lockheed-martin-says-it-can-deliver- t-50a-early-if-needed Back to Top Mysterious equipment spotted on SpaceX drone ship at Port Canaveral Stephen Marr had his suspicions when he photographed a mysterious piece of equipment atop SpaceX's drone ship at Port Canaveral on Monday. "I knew there was something different there," Marr, 34, said. So he did what any lover of space and social media would do: He posted it online. Reddit users quickly propelled Marr's clear, high-resolution photo to the top of the website's SpaceX community and so began discussion that the object was likely a highly anticipated robot that would interact with Falcon 9 first stages. "Optimus Prime," as some have nicknamed it, could one day secure first stages after they land on SpaceX's autonomous spaceport drone ships. Like previous upgrades, it could cut down on costs, number of required personnel and turnaround time between launches. It could also improve safety. "Optimus Prime" refers to a character from "Transformers." Ricky Lim, senior director of launch operations for SpaceX, told FLORIDA TODAY the device is "in the testing phase" and is a "future capability" that SpaceX plans to introduce as soon as it passes the test regimen. "I don't think it's very far away" from being used, Lim said. "But it's new." SpaceX did not comment when asked about its functionality and features. Lim said SpaceX doesn't have an official name yet for the robot, joking that, for the time being, "we'll let Reddit name it for us." Marr's photo bucks the trend of grainy cellphone images - it was captured with a telephoto lens during a six-minute helicopter tour of the Space Coast. Marr's girlfriend, Tiffany Guerin, is a professional photographer and was with him during the tour. "A couple hours later, I checked it, and it was just blowing up," Marr said. "Everybody seemed to really appreciate that picture." For Marr, the photograph solidifies his and Guerin's decision to move to Cocoa Beach from Tennessee six weeks ago after fostering a love for space. "I love it. Obviously it's the reason we moved down here," Marr said. "This is kind of my Super Bowl, to watch SpaceX do the things they do," he said. "Then you've got Blue Origin coming up, and everyone's innovating. It's just an exciting time to be watching this kind of stuff." SpaceX's next mission - now targeting no earlier than March 29 from Kennedy Space Center - will be closely watched. It will mark the first time the company attempts to fly a used, or "flight proven," Falcon 9 first stage and brings full circle CEO Elon Musk's vision for rocket reusability. It was first flown nearly a year ago in April 2016 on the CRS-8 resupply mission to the International Space Station. On board will be SES-10, a commercial communications satellite built by Airbus Space and Defense for Luxembourg-based SES. Once deployed, the satellite will significantly increase communications bandwidth for Latin America. SpaceX will attempt to land the flight proven first stage on the "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. http://www.floridatoday.com/story/tech/science/space/2017/03/22/spacex-equipment-spotted- port-canaveral-florida-falcon9-reddit-drone-ship-ses10-kennedy-space-center/99457762/ Curt Lewis
