Worth,TX (USA) with 149 people on board, was climbing out of Santiago when the crew advised they were troubleshooting an issue and requested to level off at FL110. The aircraft entered a hold. About 20 minutes later the crew advised they needed to return to Santiago due to a problem with the slats and positioned for an approach to Santiago's runway 17L about 45 minutes after departure. The aircraft remained on the ground for about 14 hours, then departed again and is currently estimated to reach Dallas with a delay of 14:40 hours. https://avherald.com/h?article=4e839194&opt=0 Incident: PSA CRJ7 at Washington on May 30th 2021, rejected takeoff due to wing overheat warning A PSA Airlines Canadair CRJ-700 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N528EG performing flight AA-5151 from Washington National,DC to Raleigh/Durham,NC (USA), was accelerating for takeoff from Washington's runway 01 when the crew rejected takeoff at high speed due to a wing overheat indication. The aircraft slowed safely, vacated the runway onto runway 33 and returned to the apron. The aircraft remained on the ground for about 4 hours, then departed and reached Raleigh/Durham with a delay of 3.5 hours. https://avherald.com/h?article=4e839512&opt=0 Slat Issue Prompts Santiago American Airlines Boeing 787 Return An American Airlines Dreamliner flying from Santiago to Dallas Fort Worth decided to return to Santiago on Sunday after a slat issue arose shortly after departure. The plane landed back in Santiago safely and all 149 passengers and crew onboard were uninjured. Overnight flight cut short by a problem with plane’s slats Simon Hradecky first reported the incident in The Aviation Herald. According to that report, an American Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered as N818AL was operating American Airlines flight AA940 on Sunday, May 30. Shortly after take-off, an “issue” cropped up. The plane leveled off, pilots worked on the problem, discovered an issue with the slats, and decided to return to Santiago. The flight, AA940, is American’s scheduled mid-evening departure from Santiago. The 4,890-mile flight normally takes 10 plus hours for their Dreamliner to cover. On Saturday, the plane was back on the ground in Santiago after just over one hour in the air. According to aircraft tracking site RadarBox.com. N818AL touched down in Santiago on Sunday morning, having operated AA945 down from Dallas Fort Worth. The return flight to Dallas Fort Worth was due to depart at 20:15 (local time) on Sunday evening. Flight levels off before pilots troubleshoot and decide to return The flight departed on time before taking off to the south and banking west over the Santiago suburb of Rinconada. Near Lo Prado, the Dreamliner turned onto a more northerly direction. The aircraft was climbing steadily until just south of Colliquay, it leveled off at 11,000 feet. According to The Aviation Herald report, the pilots became aware of a problem by this stage and requested permission to stop the climb. N818AL began orbiting over Ventanas as the pilots worked on resolving the issue. After about 20 minutes, the pilots contacted ATC, reporting a problem with the slats, and said the plane would turn back. The flight headed southeast towards Tranque Ovejeria before turning south and tracking towards Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport. The Dreamliner was back on the ground by 21:19 local time. The aircraft, N818AL, began flying for American Airlines in March 2017. These days, the plane operates across American’s international network, flying a few domestic connector flights along the way. This is the first recorded incident involving N818AL – as you’d expect from a young plane flying for an airline with a blue-chip maintenance program. Hurdles as American Airlines rebuilds in South America American Airlines continues to rebuild its network in South America despite several hurdles. American fell out with its local partner LATAM in 2019 after Delta Air Lines bought a stake in LATAM. That left a big hole in American’s South American network. Then the worldwide travel downturn rolled around, and American’s presence in South America was a show of its former network. More recently, the Dallas-based airline has pushed back into South America – with varying degrees of success. Their Santiago flights hit a roadblock in April when Chile temporarily closed its borders. The Dallas Fort Worth flights have since resumed, but American Airlines has delayed the start date of its new Santiago – New York flights until July. Meanwhile, after a 14-hour delay, N818AL is back in the air. Whatever the problem with the slats was, American Airlines clearly resolved them. The aircraft took off at 10:49 (local time) on Monday morning, operating the delayed AA940 flight. At the time of publication, N818AL is approaching the United States coastline near Galveston. The Dreamliner is expected to land at Dallas Fort Worth at 20:00 CDT on Monday evening. https://simpleflying.com/santiago-aa-787-slat-issue/ Oops: American Airlines Boeing 737 Taxis Into A Pole In Dallas With all the precautions and procedures in place on the airfield, aircraft accidents are fortunately not that common. Mistakes do occur, though, as was demonstrated when an American Airlines 737-800 hit a pole at Dallas Fort Worth airport on Friday 28th May. Luckily there were no injuries, but the wing (and the pole) were badly damaged. The accident happened at Dallas Fort Worth airport as American Airlines Flight 1005 to Nassau was taxing away from the gate. As the 737-800 was turning left to head to the taxiway, the left-wing struck a lamp post. The far end of the wing was damaged, and the pole collapsed completely. CCTV captured the taxi and the accident, and it has been shared online. It appears likely to be pilot error in misjudging the turn, possibly with the crew turning too early or sharply, or applying power as they turned. Obviously, a full investigation has begun to determine what other factors may have contributed. The airline confirmed that no passengers were injured in the accident. The aircraft returned to the gate, and passengers were transferred to an Airbus A321 still operating the same flight number, AA1005, to Nassau. Damage to the 737 The pole can hopefully be repaired quickly. But this is not necessarily the same for the aircraft. From photographs shared on Twitter, it appears that the left-wing leading edge was badly damaged. The wing remains intact, though, and it doesn’t seem like there was any engine damage or damage to the fuel tanks (this could obviously have been a much worse accident). The aircraft involved is a Boeing 737-800, with registration N834NN. It joined American Airlines new in April 2010. The 737-800 is American Airlines’ most operated aircraft type. It has 303 currently in the fleet (based on data from ch-aviation.com). Overall though, the Airbus narrowbody fleet is larger – with 251 A321, 48 A320, and 133 A319 aircraft (and, of course, the new A321XLR on the way). Repairing the aircraft As of Tuesday, June 1st, the aircraft remains at DFW airport. Clearly, it cannot be flown with this damage, so at least some of the repairs will take place at the airport. DFW is, of course, a major base for American Airlines (its largest of several hubs) and the location of its corporate headquarters. Its main maintenance and repair facility is in Tulsa, but it also operates maintenance facilities at most of its hubs, including DFW. The facility there regularly handles the 777, 787, A320 family, and the 737 family. Simple Flying took an exclusive look inside the DFW facility early in 2021. Had an accident like this occurred at a distant airport, repairs would obviously be a lot more complicated and time-consuming. Hopefully, American will be able to get this aircraft repaired locally and back into service soon. https://simpleflying.com/american-airlines-boeing-737-pole/ United Airlines Boeing 787-9 Flies Four-Hour Flight To Nowhere After Inflight Failure A United Airlines Boeing 787-9 flying from Houston to Argentina returned to Houston mid-flight after the aircraft experienced a generator failure. The plane returned to Houston four hours after takeoff. There were no reported injuries and limited impact on airport operations. United’s four-hour flight to nowhere According to the Aviation Herald, a United Airlines Boeing 787-9 flying flight UA819 from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) in Buenos Aires suffered an incident inflight. The aircraft took off from Houston and was en route over Guatemala when the crew decided to return to Houston. The reason for the diversion, according to the report, was a generator failure. Reports state the cabin lights went out, emergency lights came on, and the crew advised they were running on the backup generator, though both engines were operating normally. The aircraft turned around and headed back to Houston. IAH prepared for the arrival, though the aircraft landed safely just over four hours after departure. The plane was able to vacate the runway on its own. According to data from RadarBox.com, the plane departed Houston at 21:06 local time and returned to the airport at 01:27 the next morning. United accommodated passengers on another Boeing 787-9. The flight departed Houston on May 30th at 10:40 local time, arriving in Buenos Aires at 21:34, according to data from RadarBox.com. The Boeing 787s have six generators. There are two in each engine and two per APU. The 787 has a significant need for electricity, requiring powerful generators. While the crew activated a backup generator, the safest decision, according to the crew, was for the jet to return to Houston. The aircraft The aircraft involved in the initial flight was N13954. According to data from ch-aviation.com, the aircraft is 6.2 years old. The plane has only flown with United in its history. The Boeing 787-9 operating this flight was one of the jets sporting the older Polaris cabin and no premium economy. The plane seats 252 passengers. With room for 48 in business class, 88 in extra-legroom economy, and 116 in standard economy. All seats feature access to inflight power and seatback entertainment. WiFi is offered onboard the aircraft. The replacement Boeing 787-9 is registered as N26967. The jet is also an aircraft that has not yet been retrofitted. The route Houston is United’s gateway to Latin America, though the carrier has been diversifying its presence in Latin America through the crisis. United is the only carrier flying nonstop between Houston and Buenos Aires. Pre-crisis, United flew the Boeing 777-200ER on the route. However, with the ongoing crisis and associated reduction in travel demand, United has opted to put the more fuel-efficient Boeing 787-9 on the route, which is also marginally smaller in terms of capacity than the 777-200ERs in United’s fleet. The US and Argentina have also been at odds over passenger flights. The US, alleging that Argentina has been blocking US carriers from flying to the country while Aerolineas Argentinas continues to fly between the US and Argentina, has laid the groundwork to block Aerolineas Argentinas from flying to the United States if US carriers do not get permission to run their own flights to Argentina. https://simpleflying.com/united-787-9-generator-failure/ Singapore Airlines Says Reserves Sufficient for Well Into 2023 Singapore Airlines Ltd. said the S$6.2 billion ($4.7 billion) raised through convertible bonds, along with existing cash reserves, should cover its financial needs well into the year ending March 2023, according to a statement Tuesday. The nation’s flagship carrier was responding to questions from the Securities Investors Association (Singapore) last month about whether it has considered privatization. Singapore Airlines said that privatization wasn’t a matter for it to consider because it is a shareholder action. “Given that the proceeds from the rights issue will be treated as equity in the balance sheet, this allows us to maintain a strong equity base and creates options for raising further debt financing as necessary,” the airline said. Singapore Airlines has raised S$15.4 billion, which includes S$8.8 billion from a rights offering, since April last year and cut about 20% of its workforce to reduce costs. The International Air Transport Association in April widened its estimate for losses this year to about $48 billion as new Covid flare-ups push back the timeline for a start of international air travel. The situation is particularly dire for carriers like Singapore Airlines that have no domestic market to fall back on. The carrier posted its worst annual loss at the end of March in the “toughest year in its history” as Covid continues to wreak havoc on global travel. Temasek Holdings Pte, Singapore Airlines’ largest shareholder, has provided an undertaking to subscribe to its pro-rata entitlement and any remaining balance of the convertible-bond issuance, the carrier said last month. Singapore Airlines’ monthly operating cash burn has fallen to about S$100 million to S$150 million, from S$350 million at the start of the pandemic. It said it will continue to rein in cash burn through revenue generated from cargo and a gradual improvement from its passenger business. “Demand from the e-commerce and pharmaceutical segments, among others, remains robust. Singapore Airlines is well positioned to capture more Covid-19 vaccine shipments into the Asia Pacific region as vaccine production ramps up and exports grow,” it said in Tuesday’s statement. The move, which came just weeks after Cathay said it would close a pilot base in Canada and hours before the airline on Tuesday evening said it would proceed with plans to shut its pilot bases in Australia, points to a move away from a long-term strategy of employing many expatriates. Last year Cathay closed its regional arm Cathay Dragon, putting hundreds of pilots out of work, many of them citizens and permanent residents in Hong Kong. "While we are still not seeing immediate, meaningful signs of growth, the recruitment we are conducting at this stage is about forward planning," Cathay said in a statement. "We will be looking to hire qualified talent who are already in Hong Kong and have the right to live and work here." Expatriates can gain permanent residency after seven years in Hong Kong. Cathay pilots with temporary work visas have received shorter than usual renewals since the closure of Cathay Dragon, said two sources who were not authorised to speak publicly about the matter. The airline said it had supported each application for visa renewal and was actively following up on their status with the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Most airlines only hire locals and permanent residents, but Cathay, like many of the large Middle Eastern carriers, has typically relied heavily on foreign pilots. However, last year Cathay made its Hong Kong-based pilots agree to permanent pay cuts to keep their jobs, making living in the expensive city a less attractive proposition. The airline, which lacks a domestic market at a time when international borders are largely shut, reported a fall of 99.3% in April passenger numbers, compared with pre-pandemic levels in April 2019.
