Several family members and their lawyers held a video meeting Wednesday with Garland. They told the attorney general that the Justice Department violated a federal law by not informing them before finalizing the settlement in January 2021, two weeks before the Trump administration left office. Garland expressed sympathy to relatives who spoke during the meeting but made no promises or substantive comments on the case, according to participants. Last month, the families of more than a dozen passengers filed a motion in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, alleging that the Justice Department violated a 2004 victims' rights law by not consulting with them before reaching the settlement, which shielded Boeing from criminal prosecution. They are also seeking documents that the department gathered during its investigation. Michael Stumo, whose 24-year-old daughter Samya was killed in the 2019 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Max, said passengers' relatives were blindsided and “erupted in anger, shock and renewed grief” when the settlement was announced. “We don't think they could have gotten this deal through if they had allowed us to have any input and knowledge,” he said. Stumo and two relatives of other passengers spoke during the meeting. Their lawyer, Paul Cassell, a former federal judge, argued that failing to inform families ahead of time made the settlement illegal. They asked Garland to support their legal argument that the Trump administration's Justice Department violated a crime-victims' law. Cassell believes that if a court accepts that argument, it could invalidate the agreement. The family members, however, stopped short of asking Garland for a specific outcome, such as whether negotiations with Boeing should start over. Several high-ranking Justice Department officials in Washington and Texas also attended the meeting. The department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Boeing also declined to comment. In all, 346 people were killed in two Max crashes, the first in Indonesia in 2018, and another five months later in Ethiopia. All Max jets were grounded worldwide for nearly two years. They were cleared to fly again after Boeing overhauled an automated flight-control system that activated erroneously in both crashes. In the January 2021 settlement, Boeing blamed two former test pilots for misleading the Federal Aviation Administration about the flight-control system before regulators approved the plane in 2017. The Justice Department agreed to drop a criminal charge of conspiracy to defraud the government if Boeing follows terms of the deal for three years. Nearly $1.8 billion of the settlement money was set aside for airlines that lost money because their planes were grounded. Another $500 million went into a fund for victims’ relatives, and Boeing agreed to pay a $243.6 million fine. Naoise Connolly Ryan, whose husband Mick died in the second crash, called the deal "a slap on the wrist that wrongly holds no executive accountable.” She also spoke to Garland during Wednesday's meeting. Since the settlement, one of the former Boeing test pilots, Mark Forkner, has been charged with fraud. https://www.yahoo.com/news/families-crash-victims-ask-us-210805764.html Thieves break into Arik airplane in Lagos, strip cockpit gadgets (Nigeria) Suspected thieves have broken into an Arik Air aircraft parked at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, stealing valuable gadgets. The break-in, according to findings, has left the Boeing 737 aircraft grounded without its Flight Management Computer (FMC) and other accessories. Arik spokesperson, Banji Ola, yesterday, confirmed the security breach, saying the matter has been reported to appropriate authorities. The Guardian learnt that the Boeing 737-73V, with registration number EI-ULN, was raided between 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday night when the airplane was parked, and 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2022, when the break-in was first noticed. The FMC is a fundamental component of a modern airliner’s gadgets. It is a specialised computer system that automates a wide variety of in-flight tasks, reducing the workload on the flight crew to the point that modern civilian aircraft no longer carry flight engineers or navigators. A primary function is in-flight management of the flight plan. Aviation stakeholders said the break-in and removal of the FMC could only have been done by an insider with technical know-how. The Lagos airport has had security issues lately. The Guardian had earlier reported multiple vandalisation of vehicles at the fee-for-service Seymour Aviation Multi-level Car Park at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Motorists and travellers alike complained about forced entries into parked cars, removal of car accessories and personal effects, coupled with harassment of users. In December, Arik Air filed an occurrence report with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) over attempted robbery of its taxing aircraft by unknown men that encroached the runway at the Lagos airport. According to reports, runway robbers attempting to open the cargo compartment of the taxing Boeing 737-800 was the second of such foiled attempts recorded by the local airline in two weeks. On December 16, it was the case of an ignorant auto-technician test-running a faulty car on Runway 18L and heading for a collision with an oncoming Max Air jet. Former Commandant of the Lagos Airport in the ‘90s, Group Capt. John Ojikutu (rtd), who is also an aviation security consultant, said there are houses behind the airport perimeter fences that have exceeded standard security limits. “Some of these houses are either using the fences as part of their building or as fences for their houses. That is why incursion into the airport and taxiing aircraft are rampant. “There is need for FAAN security to conduct random checks on all those carrying On Duty Cards (ODC) within the airport security controlled areas, to fish out unauthorised persons, especially those that have been out of the services of their employers but are still carrying the ID cards and the airport’s ODC,” Ojikutu said. https://guardian.ng/news/thieves-break-into-arik-airplane-in-lagos-strip-cockpit-gadgets/ A third of airline pilots still not flying as pandemic drags on -survey (Reuters) – More than one-third of airline pilots are still not flying as the pandemic continues to take its toll on aviation globally, according to a new survey, though the situation has improved from a year earlier when the majority were grounded. A poll of more than 1700 pilots by UK-based GOOSE Recruitment and industry publication FlightGlobal, released on Wednesday, found 62% globally were employed and currently flying, up from 43% a year earlier. The proportion of unemployed pilots fell from 30% to 20%, while 6% were on furlough, compared with 17% previously as air traffic began to bounce back from 2020 lows. But in the Asia-Pacific region, the worst-hit globally by a drop in international travel due to tough border restrictions, the proportion of those unemployed rose from 23% to 25%. The region also had the lowest number that were employed flying at 53%. “We have … seen some expatriates return home from the region due to concerns over quarantine or being stuck for long periods away from friends and family,” the report on the survey said. Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways, a large expatriate employer in Asia, has lost hundreds of pilots through the closure of its Cathay Dragon regional arm as well as almost all of its overseas bases during the pandemic. Pilot attrition at Cathay has also been rising amid strict layover rules that leave crew members locked https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/locked-hotels-hong-kongs-covid-19-rules-take-mental-toll-cathay-pilots-2021-11-26 in hotels when they are not flying. Of the pilots still flying globally, 61% told the survey they were concerned about their job security. “It appears only Northern America is back to post-COVID passenger numbers,” said an unnamed captain flying in the Middle East and Africa. “The rest of the world, especially developing nations, are still struggling to get vaccines, and are still not travelling.” https://wtvbam.com/2022/01/26/a-third-of-airline-pilots-still-not-flying-as-pandemic-drags-on-survey/ Elon Musk offered a 19 year-old $5,000 to take down a Twitter account that tracks his private jet, report says • Elon Musk offered the owner of an account called "Elon's Jet" $5,000 to remove it, Protocol reported. • The account uses public data to track the location of Musk's private jet. • Its owner countered with an offer of $50,000 but has not heard back from Musk. • Get the latest tech news & scoops — delivered daily to your inbox. Elon Musk messaged the owner of a Twitter account that tracks his private jet, with an offer of $5,000 if he took the account offline, tech news site Protocol reports. The "Elon's Jet" account shows the movements of Musk's private jet, using bots that monitor publicly available air traffic data. Per Protocol, the owner of the account, 19 year-old Jack Sweeney, received a message in fall last year at 12:13 a.m. from Musk. It said: "Can you take this down? It is a security risk." Sweeney replied: "Yes I can but it'll cost you a Model 3 only joking unless?" per Protocol. Musk said: "I don't love the idea of being shot by a nutcase," according to Protocol. Musk offered Sweeney $5,000 after a few messages back and forth, Protocol reported. "Any chance to up that to $50k? It would be great support in college and would possibly allow me to get a car maybe even a Model 3," Sweeney responded, per Protocol. According to the outlet, Musk said he would think about it but has not been back in touch. When Sweeney told Musk where he was aggregating the data from, Musk responded: "Air traffic control is so primitive," Protocol reported. It's not clear whether Protocol viewed the Twitter messages. Musk tweeted earlier this month that social-media accounts tracking his movements are "becoming a security issue." Jack Sweeney did not immediately respond when contacted out-of-hours for comment. Insider was not immediately able to contact Elon Musk. https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-offered-5k-remove-jet-tracker-twitter-account-report-2022-1 Photo Courtesy: Northern Pacific Airways, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons This New Airline Could Make It Cheaper to Get to Asia — Here's How As the world emerges from the pandemic, startup low-cost airline Northern Pacific Airways intends to become the first discount trans-Pacific operator with passenger service on long-haul routes between the U.S. and Asia through its forthcoming Alaska hub. The cool and edgy black-on-white livery with ice-blue highlights "captures the Northern Pacific brand and our affection for our Alaskan home," CEO Rob McKinney said, as the company's first Boeing 757-200 was revealed last week in San Bernadino, California. "I wanted to reflect the natural beauty of the Alaskan wilderness... [and] to make sure everyone understood we're an Alaskan company." Northern Pacific plans to standout with lower fares and a much better passenger experience, using Anchorage as a midway stopover point between Asia and the lower 48 states. Northern Pacific's goal is to offer pricing at 10 to 25 percent below current fares, and stimulate new traffic serving passengers who would not typically pay a premium for a flight to Asia. Plus, by clearing customs and immigration in Anchorage, McKinney posited that the carrier can provide a quicker and easier transition into the United States than airlines flying directly into crowded West Coast cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Initially, Northern Pacific will focus on customers immediately connecting their inbound and outbound flights through Alaska, with flights timed to ensure quick connections. Long term, the goal is to develop the market for multiday stopovers at no additional cost, including using domestic flights on sister airline Ravn Alaska, also helmed by McKinney. "We're really inspired by Icelandair and what they've accomplished," McKinney said in a statement released to Travel + Leisure. The strategy will resemble Icelandair's tried-and-true model by creating a hub in Anchorage to "replicate what Icelandair has done so successfully in Reykjavik." The company plans to install a mini-IMAX theater in its lounge at Anchorage airport to entice travelers to explore more of Alaska, McKinney said. "The goal is to encourage people to spend a day or two here and go salmon fishing, or go ride a sled dog on a glacier, or just all kinds of things you can only do here in Alaska," McKinney told Business Insider, again highlighting Icelandair's success in promoting stopovers in Iceland. The CEO also believes Northern Pacific will prove attractive with "cutting-edge" inflight entertainment, including the ability for passengers to stream using personal Netflix accounts on their devices. And younger travelers, in particular, may be drawn in by the company's unique rewards program. Instead of earning frequent flyer miles, the carrier hopes to build loyalty by offering passengers FlyCoin cryptocurrency, which they can hold for investment, trade into regular currency, or use at concessions in Anchorage's Ted Stevens International Airport and, perhaps eventually, in tourism businesses and stores throughout Alaska. "The traditional world of travel rewards programs is ripe for change," explained Lenny Moon, CEO of FlyCoin and CFO at Northern Pacific. "A cryptocurrency is the medium to reward our loyal customers for traveler participation, but not force their loyalty by constraining how they choose to redeem those rewards." McKinney said that he expected commercial flights to begin "in the third or fourth quarter of 2022," while noting that plans are fluid because Japan and Korea are still closed to tourism. Northern Pacific has yet to formally announce routes and fares. The carrier hopes to launch with flights from Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York City, Orlando, and Ontario, California, as the first U.S. gateways, connecting via Anchorage to Seoul, South Korea, and airports in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, Japan. The fledgling airline has so far secured nine Boeing 757-200s, all of which were retired by American Airlines in 2020. Northern Pacific intends to acquire three more 757s by the time passenger service begins. The cut-rate purchase price of the older aircraft is a key factor in the carrier's plan to compete on the 'Northwest Passage' route at a lower cost than established competitors. Nonetheless, the company recently changed its plans to offer only economy and premium seating. Like Icelandair, it will launch with a 12-seat business cabin, as well as premium economy and economy class, with a total of 180 seats. Longer term, new-technology aircraft are in the cards as Northern Pacific plans service to other Asian destinations beyond reach of the 757-200s's 4,000-mile range. The company plans on scaling up to 50 aircraft within five years and is currently eyeing the A321XLR and 737 MAX, plus next-generation widebodies, McKinney said. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/airline-could-cheaper-asia-heres-220147053.html North Carolina chosen for supersonic passenger jet plant RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A Colorado-based aviation company announced Wednesday that it has chosen a North Carolina airport as the manufacturing site for next-generation supersonic passenger jets. If successful, the investment could create more than 2,000 jobs in the region over the next decade while cutting flight times significantly for a post-Concorde generation of air travelers. Boom Supersonic announced that Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro will be the home for its first full-scale manufacturing plant, including the final assembly line, testing and delivery center for its proposed Overture supersonic airliner. Boom estimates it will create over 1,750 jobs by 2030, with a goal of reaching more than 2,400 jobs by 2032. State and local governments have offered $230 million in financial incentives to make the project a reality, including money for airport improvements, which the legislature approved in November, and other sweeteners approved Wednesday. As with most such projects, some of the incentives going to Boom Technology Inc., the company’s parent, will be canceled if it doesn’t meet job-creation and investment goals. The anticipated capital investment is $500 million. Jacksonville, Florida, and Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, were also in the running for the plant, according to a state Commerce Department official who publicly briefed an incentives committee prior to the announcement. The project had been known to recruiters as “Project Thunderbird.” The Overture plane is designed to carry 65 to 88 passengers, consume sustainable aviation fuel and cruise at 60,000 feet (18,290 meters) at 1,300 mph (2,090 kph) — twice the speed of today’s passenger jets. Many technical and manufacturing hurdles still must be overcome before the aircraft becomes a practical option for airlines, however. In a news release Wednesday, the company said the new factory will begin production in 2024, with the first Overture aircraft rolled out in 2025, flying in 2026 and carrying its first passengers by 2029. “Selecting the site for Overture manufacturing is a significant step forward in bringing sustainable supersonic air travel to passengers and airlines,” Boom Supersonic CEO Blake Scholl said in the release. He said North Carolina’s ready aerospace workforce, easy access to technical schools and proximity to aerospace suppliers were factors influencing the company’s decision to locate here. The Piedmont Triad airport is already the headquarters of Honda Aircraft Co. and the production site for its seven-passenger HondaJet Elites. “Boom is confident that Greensboro will emerge as the world’s supersonic manufacturing hub,” Scholl said. Gov. Roy Cooper and other elected leaders and recruiters gathered in Greensboro for the announcement. It came less than two months after Toyota said it would build an electric vehicle battery plant in the region, which is a roughly 90-minute car trip west from Raleigh. Cooper made a reference to the crowd about North Carolina’s “First in Flight” designation — it was on the Outer Banks that the Wright brothers’ completed the first powered self-propelled flights in December 1903. “This afternoon, we’re launching the future of flight,” Cooper said. “We are ready with the education, the diverse workforce, with the transportation, with the good economy and with the quality of life necessary for success.” The average salary for plant employees is expected to be almost $69,000 annually. Boom is one of several companies trying to revive supersonic passenger travel, which died with the grounding of the Concorde nearly two decades ago. Boom has built a one-third-size demonstrator aircraft called the XB1, but now it faces the daunting challenge of bulking that up. Boom boasts of “pre-orders” from several potential customers. United Airlines also announced last year an agreement to buy 15 copies of the Overture and take options for another 35. United, however, said any orders hinge on Boom meeting certain financial and operational targets, which it declined to describe in any detail. Skeptics say that if supersonic passenger travel were really feasible, Boeing and Airbus would be building the planes instead of leaving the market to startups like Boom. The Concorde flew over the Atlantic and was barred from many overland routes because of the sonic booms, and any new supersonic planes will face the same hurdles. Another factor that helped kill the Concorde was its high cost of operation. Scholl has said technology will help solve both of those challenges, and tickets should be in the range of current-day business-class fares. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/officials-boom-aims-build-supersonic-172318684.html Exports booming, Taiwan's China Airlines orders 4 more Boeing freighters TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's China Airlines Ltd said on Thursday its board had approved the purchase of four more Boeing Co 777F freighters, adding to an earlier order for six of the same model as it steps up capacity to support the island's booming exports. The jets would begin deliveries from 2023, it added in a statement. Three of the six previously ordered aircraft have already arrived. China Airlines, Taiwan's largest carrier and the world's fifth largest air freight operator, also operates 18 747 freighters. Tech powerhouse Taiwan, a major semiconductor manufacturer, has benefited from demand for tablets, laptops and other gadgets during the work-and-study-from-home trend during the COVID-19 pandemic. Taiwan's exports rose 29.4% in 2021 to a record high. Boeing this week said it aims to increase its 777/777X production to three aircraft per month in 2022 from two previously, fuelled by orders for 777 freighters amid booming air cargo demand. It reiterated plans to deliver the first 777X in late 2023. China Airlines also operates 10 passenger 777-300 jets in its long-haul fleet. https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/exports-booming-taiwans-china-airlines-064812776.html ARGUS International, Inc. is Growing Senior Vice President, Consulting Position Available ARGUS International, Inc.: Founded in 1995, ARGUS is the worldwide leader in specialized aviation services that allow organizations around the globe to improve their operational and business decision making.
