The crew decided to divert to Warsaw, climbed to FL130 and landed safely on runway 15 about 45 minutes after aborting the approach to Wroclaw. A passenger reported the aircraft had already been swapped before departure and was delayed by about 90 minutes as a result. The crew announced they needed to divert to Warsaw due to problems with the brakes (the passenger said, it remained unclear in the context whether the wheel brakes or speed brakes), on landing in Warsaw they were told to assume the brace position. The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 15 hours, then positioned back to Frankfurt/Main and remained on the ground in Frankfurt for another 31 hours before returning to service. https://www.avherald.com/h?article=4fa81b05&opt=0 Incident: Indigo A20N at Guwahati on Jun 19th 2022, bird strike An Indigo Airbus A320-200N, registration VT-ITB performing flight 6E-6394 from Guwahati to Delhi (India), was climbing out of Guwahati's runway 02 when the crew stopped the climb at about 2000 feet after the left hand engine (PW1127G) ingested a bird. The aircraft returned to Guwahati for a safe landing on runway 20 about 15 minutes after departure. A post flight inspection revealed two fan blades of the left hand engine had fractured and separated at their root (but were contained), all other fan blades showed damage to their tips and leading edges. The airline reported the left hand engine got damaged when a bird was ingested at about 1600 feet MSL. The crew worked the related checklists, shut the engine down and returned to Guwahati. https://www.avherald.com/h?article=4fa880fb&opt=0 Incident: TAP A339 near Lisbon on Jun 17th 2022, engine problem A TAP Air Portugal Airbus A330-900, registration CS-TUR performing flight TP-277 from Lisbon (Portugal) to Cancun (Mexico), was climbing through FL310 out of Lisbon when the crew stopped the climb and drifted down to FL190 due to a left engine problem (Trent 7000). The aircraft turned around to return to Lisbon for a safe landing on runway 21 about 65 minutes after stopping the climb. A replacement Airbus A330-900 registration CS-TUA reached Cancun with a delay of about 7 hours. The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Lisbon about 58 hours after landing back. The airline reported the aircraft returned to Lisbon due to a technical malfunction in one of the engines. https://www.avherald.com/h?article=4fa8275c&opt=0 Incident: Spicejet B738 at Patna on Jun 19th 2022, bird strike A Spicejet Boeing 737-800, registration VT-SYZ performing flight SG-723 from Patna to Delhi (India) with 185 people on board, was climbing out of Patna's runway 25 when the left hand engine (CFM56) ingested a bird and emitted streaks of flames. The crew levelled off at about 2500 feet, shut the engine down and returned to Patna for a safe landing on runway 25 about 20 minutes after departure. India's DGCA reported an engine ingested a bird and was shut down. The airline reported during rotation for takeoff the #1 engine suffered what the crew suspected was a bird strike. The crew shut the engine down and returned to Patna. A replacement flight is being arranged. https://www.avherald.com/h?article=4fa7c21f&opt=0 Accident: Wizz A21N at Kutaisi on May 27th 2022, hard landing and tail strike A Wizzair Hungary Airbus A321-200N, registration HA-LVR performing flight W6-6412 from Milan Malpensa (Italy) to Kutaisi (Georgia), landed on Kutaisi's runway 07 at 00:29L (20:29Z May 26th) but touched down hard and suffered a tail strike. The aircraft went around, positioned for another approach to runway 07 and landed without further incident. The aircraft is still on the ground in Kutaisi 23 days after the occurrence. The Tata Group took control of Air India on January 27 after successfully winning the bid for the airline on October 8 last year. On the sidelines of the 78th annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association, aviation industry sources said Air India is considering buying 200 new planes. The share of narrow-bodied aircraft to that of wide-bodied planes will be 70:30. They said that the decision on which narrow-bodied plane to buy — to go for Airbus A320 family aircraft or Boeing’s 737Max aircraft — is yet to be taken. According to Air India's website, the airline has a total of 49 wide-bodied aircraft - 18 Boeing B777, 4 Boeing B747 and 27 Boeing B787 - in its fleet. In the last few days, separate reports have emerged about two crucial issues for Cathay Pacific, retaining pilots and fleet renewal. At some point, Hong Kong and China will open their borders to travel, and these reports raise questions about how well prepared Cathay Pacific is for that resumption. It's time for Cathay Pacific to decide on fleet renewal Cathay Pacific Several former Emirates 777-300s joined Cathay Pacific, which also operates the 777-300ER Both reports are from Bloomberg, with the first containing an interview with Cathay Pacific Airways (Cathay) CEO Augustus Tang on fleet renewal. According to ch-aviation.com, Cathay's current fleet stands at 186 aircraft, with 91 of those currently active. In the total fleet, it has four Airbus A320ceos, four A321ceos, six A321NX, 51 A330-300s, 15 A350-1000s and 28 A350-900s. Its Boeing aircraft include 17 B777-300s, 41 B777-300ERs and 14 B787F and six B747F cargo aircraft. It also has 21 B777X, five A350 and ten A321NX on order. The average fleet age is 11.5 years, but for the A330s it is 15.5 years, 18 years for the A320/321ceos, and 21 years for the B777-300s. The Bloomberg report says that Cathay is looking to renew its short- and medium-haul fleet, with a focus on the A330 and B777 aircraft. These aircraft are the backbone of services throughout Asia and to Australia, New Zealand and India. Tang said that the renewal of regional jets was similar to Cathay's original purchase of the B777s, the mainstay of the airline's intercontinental fleet. He said the fleet decision was crucial and that Cathay is constantly looking at its fleet requirements, adding: "We haven't come up with a decision as to when we will be going to the market, but this is a topic we are looking at very closely, particularly the regional fleet." Some renewal decisions have already been made, with the B777X, A350 and A321neo aircraft on order. Cathay is open-minded about selecting Boeing, Airbus or both types and includes the B737 MAX in its considerations. It is a prestigious opportunity for both OEMs and will be eagerly fought over. Cathay Pacific is looking for 700 new pilots and 800 trainees, but will it get them? Cathay Pacific lost around 500 pilots when it closed Cathay Dragon in October 2020. The second Bloomberg report comes from an online staff presentation by Cathay's chief operations and service delivery officer, Greg Hughes. In the presentation, he confirms that resignation rates are much higher than Cathay has historically seen. He says, "It would be an incorrect statement for me to make that COS18 is not one of the reasons." In response to COVID-19, Cathay Pacific Airways announced in 2020 that it was cutting its workforce by 25%, which included 600 pilots, most from the closure of Cathay Dragon. It also changed employment conditions (COS18) for all pilots and cabin crew, who had a week to agree or leave the airline. Those most impacted were pilots who joined the airline before 2018, with pay and entitlements cut between 40% and 60%, depending on seniority. In the last few years, Cathay has reduced its workforce by around 40%, with many pilots leaving the country as the anti-China riots and then the pandemic, with its strict lockdowns, took hold in Hong Kong. In the Bloomberg interview, Augustus Tang said Cathay plans to hire 4,000 people by the end of 2023, including 700 pilots. He added the airline is also planning to recruit and train 800 new junior pilots by 2025 and that all new hires will have competitive pay packages benchmarked with the market. Given the lead time required in personnel recruitment and training, we are continually reviewing our people resource requirements for the 18-24 month period ahead and planning for the anticipated recovery in Hong Kong and global aviation in this period. For Cathay Pacific, we aim to recruit more than 4,000 frontline staff by the end of 2023 to meet our operational needs. This will include over 700 pilots, over 2,000 cabin crew, over 700 Customer Service Officers and over 300 Customer Contact Agents. We already recommenced recruiting local pilots in summer last year, including some 200 eligible, qualified pilots for Cathay Pacific, and altogether about 300 for the Group’s airlines. We also relaunched our Cadet Pilot training programme in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in April 2022, with the objective of training over 280 local cadet pilots this year and more than 1,000 by 2025. We have recommenced recruiting cabin crew. In particular, we have been reaching out to former cabin crew of the Cathay Pacific Group who we had to part ways with during the restructuring in 2020, but who expressed an interest in being notified when opportunities to rejoin Cathay Pacific arise. We have a very strong pipeline of talent that will enable us to continue to provide the high levels of service that our customers expect. Regarding aircraft, we are constantly looking at our fleet requirements. As demand for air travel soars following the pandemic, Turkish Airlines is on course to order 30 regional aircraft to support its continued growth. Back in 2019, the then chairman of Turkish Airlines, İlker Aycı, revealed that the carrier was interested in both the Airbus A220 and the Embraer 195-E2. While any order has yet to be officially announced, according to reports from Haber.Aero, the carrier has opted for the Airbus A220-300, due to its lower operating costs and longer range. This may come as no surprise, given that Turkish Airlines is already a significant Airbus customer, operating 116 Airbus A320 family aircraft, 50 Airbus A330s, and six Airbus A350-900s. Last month it announced an order for a further six A350s. Airbus A220-300 new member of the airbus single aisle family - Landing The Airbus A220-300 is believed to be the next aircraft type to join the Turkish Airlines fleet. Turkish Airlines and the Airbus A220 Carrying up to 160 passengers, and with a range of up to 5,920 km (3,678 miles), the Airbus A220-300 is well-suited to Turkish Airlines’ regional operation. From its home at Istanbul Airport, Turkish Airlines flies to over 300 destinations in 126 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, making it the largest airline in the world by the number of passenger destinations. A significant number of these destinations are within the range of the Airbus A220-300, with large swathes of Europe, Africa, and Asia within reach. However, range is not the only important factor to consider. Some of the airline’s destinations within the Airbus A220’s range are unlikely to see the aircraft due to the size of the market and slot constraints – Amsterdam Schiphol, London Heathrow, and Paris Charles de Gaulle being prime examples that regularly see Turkish Airlines widebody aircraft despite the relatively short route length. Once a Business Class cabin has been installed, and taking into account the airline’s above-average seat pitch in Economy Class, the final passenger capacity of a Turkish Airlines Airbus A220 is likely to be lower than 160. This means that the smaller, regional aircraft will also allow the carrier to look at new routes that would be too thin for its larger Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 aircraft. Turkish Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner TC-LLM Turkish Airlines' widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 787-9, are regularly seen at airports across Europe. Turkish Airlines’ existing fleet Any new aircraft will join Turkish Airlines’ existing sizeable fleet, currently made up of 354 passenger aircraft and 20 cargo aircraft. The carrier also has a further 90 passenger aircraft on order. Currently, the smallest aircraft in the airline’s fleet is the Airbus A319, which carries 126 passengers in a two-class configuration – 12 in Business Class and 114 in Economy Class. At the other end of the scale is the carrier’s largest aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ER, which carries between 349 and 400 passengers, again in a two-class configuration, but with a varying number of Business Class seats. Kuwait's Jazeera Airways is evaluating bids from engine makers Pratt & Whitney and its current supplier CFM International for a jet engine order, after issuing a request for proposals in May. The budget airline is open to offers from CFM, a General Electric and Safran joint venture, and Raytheon-owned Pratt & Whitney. A final decision on the engines to power its new Airbus narrow-body jets would hinge on the commercial terms of the deal, Jazeera Airways' chief executive Rohit Ramachandran told The National on Sunday. Asked if existing supplier CFM would be the natural choice for the engine order, Mr Ramachandran said: “It would be in Pratt & Whitney's interest to aggressively fight for this business because a decision genuinely has not been made.” In January, the airline's board approved a $3.4 billion deal to buy 28 narrow-body aircraft from Airbus after signing a preliminary agreement at the Dubai Air show in November 2021. The deal included 20 A320 Neos and eight A321 Neos. A decision on engines to power the aircraft will need to be made 24 months before delivery of the aircraft, Mr Ramachandran said. “We have time … but we will probably make a decision well before that,” he said. The 28 aircraft are scheduled for delivery from 2026, later than the airline's requirement. However, it has arranged to receive two A320 Neos powered by CFM Leap engines by the end of August, he said. “With the great support of Airbus, we have managed to engineer some slot swaps with other aircraft lessors and other airlines,” Mr Ramachandran said, declining to name them due to confidentiality clauses. “Now the first two airplanes of that order are being delivered within the next two months.” Jazeera Airways expects to record its second consecutive profitable year in 2022, “without a doubt”, on pent-up demand for travel after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, Mr Ramachandran said. The airline swung to an annual profit in 2021 as it carried more passengers and revenue increased, despite turbulent operating conditions in 2020. Ancillary and aeronautical revenue from its dedicated Terminal 5 at Kuwait International Airport, which the airline owns and operates, will also lift earnings this year, according to Mr Ramachandran. The terminal currently accounts for 20 per cent of its profit. The airline expects to carry at least 3.8 million passengers this year, about 25 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019, he said. Load factors, a measure of how well an airline is filling available seats, will reach about 80 per cent for the year. However, higher fuel prices, which are now more than double what they were last year, are among the top pressures on the business, he said. The fuel bill constitutes about 35 per cent of the airline's total costs. Jazeera Airways, which does not hedge fuel, has increased its fares in line with the rise in oil prices, Mr Ramachandran said. Despite that, forward bookings for the summer season remain “very strong” for July through to late September, with load factors for the period hovering in the “low 80s [per cent]", he said. Passenger demand is shifting from traditional routes such as London to those less-tread by Kuwaiti travellers such as Tashkent, Tbilisi and Kathmandu, Mr Ramachandran said. The proposal to exempt Kuwaiti citizens from Schengen visa requirements when travelling to the EU for short stays of up to 90 days will “give a natural push for traffic to Schengen countries, which will form part of our network moving forward”, he said. Jazeera Airways plans to start new routes to Eastern Europe by the end of the year. This week, the airline will launch new routes to Vienna and Prague, and in the next 30 days, it will add three new cities in Saudi Arabia to its network, he said. Jazeera Airways already flies to six cities in the kingdom. The airline, which already flies to Mashhad, will also add at least three more routes in Iran. “Creating these new traffic flows with cities that were never connected with Kuwait goes to the heart of the low-cost airline model: would you rather spend money on a fancy dinner or would you rather go to Prague or Vienna for a long weekend?” Mr Ramachandran said. Jazeera Airways will sign an initial agreement this week to join other Gulf airlines in operating shuttle flights to Qatar during this year's Fifa World Cup, he said.
