A63-year-old single-seat Hawker Hunter Mk 58 jet operated by contract adversary air provider Airborne Tactical Advantage Company, or ATAC, has crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina, the Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed to The War Zone. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued the pilot, but it's unclear what their current condition might be or whether they were able to eject from the aircraft before it hit the water. The full FAA statement is as follows: A single-engine Hawker crashed into the Atlantic Ocean about 40 miles southeast of Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina around 5:15 p.m. local time today. Only the pilot was on board and was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. After investigators verify the aircraft registration number at the scene, the FAA will release it (usually on the next business day) on this web page. You can look up the aircraft by its registration number on this web page. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents. Initial indications that an ATAC Hunter had crashed had appeared on social media earlier this evening. News of the crash was reportedly overhead first on publicly accessible air traffic control channels. Online flight tracking data suggests that the Hunter that crashed was one carrying the U.S. civil registration code N337AX and is leased to ATAC by Hunter Aviation International, which had disappeared from online flight tracking software. Another Mk 58, N334AX, was then tracked appearing to circle the area. Various ATAC Hunters, among other aircraft, have been tracked flying in this area since last week, where they appear to have been supporting a Composite Unit Training Exercises , or COMPTUEX, for the U.S. Navy's supercarrier USS George H.W. Bush and its associated carrier strike group. A COMPTUEX is the final phase in a carrier strike group's workup before a deployment. N571MA, an ex-Republic of Singapore Air Force KC-135R aerial refueling tanker now operated by private company Meta Aerospace, and N10FN, a Learjet 36 business jet registered to GH Equipment that also appears to be acting as an adversary in support of the COMPTUEX, were also visible online flying in the area at the time. This would not be the first time an ATAC Hunter has crashed. There have been at least four other crashes involving the company's Mk 58s since 2012, including one that came down off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii in 2018. ATAC's more recently acquired fleet of French-made Mirage F1 jets has also suffered a number of crashes in recent years, though there are no indications that there are any direct links between these incidents and mishaps involving the company's Hunters. The War Zone has also reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as Textron, ATAC's parent company, for more information. The Sheriff's Office in North Carolina's North Hanover County, in which the city of Wilmington is located, told us that they were not immediately aware of the crash offshore. https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/hawker-hunter-aggressor-jet-crashes-off-north-carolina American Airlines ending service to three cities due to pilot shortage American Airlines will eliminate service for three cities following the Labor Day holiday weekend as a result of staffing shortages, marking the latest hiccup for the airline industry amid thousands of cancellations and cuts in recent months. An airline spokesperson said the company will drop service to Toledo, Ohio; Ithaca, N.Y.; and Islip, N.Y., on Sept. 7 in response to a “regional pilot shortage.” “We’re extremely grateful for the care and service our team members provided to our customers in Islip, Ithaca and Toledo, and are working closely with them during this time,” the spokesperson said in an email to The Hill. “We’ll proactively reach out to customers scheduled to travel after this date to offer alternate arrangements.” Travel demand has surged, with large numbers of Americans taking trips for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The Transportation Security Administration said it screened about 2.44 million people at airports on Friday, a total greater than any other day since Nov. 28, 2021. Meanwhile, airlines have struggled to keep up with rising demand after shedding millions of jobs at the height of the pandemic, driving prices higher. Thousands of flights were canceled or delayed this past weekend ahead of Father’s Day and Juneteenth. Delta Air Lines cut 100 flights from its daily schedule between July 1 and Aug. 7, and the company’s pilots wrote an open letter to customers published Thursday saying they were flying a “record amount” of overtime to reduce the high number of cancellations. Other airlines have cut back on their schedules as well. Southwest Airlines cut 20,000 flights this summer, The Dallas Morning News reported. American is also making changes to eight other routes, which the airline spokesperson said is to better match the current demand environment. All of those routes include one of the airline’s hub airports as an origin or destination city. Three regional carriers wholly owned by American — PSA Airlines, Envoy Air and Piedmont Airlines — recently announced contract agreements with American that include “significant pay increases” as part of efforts to attract and retain pilots, according to the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), a pilot union that represents the employees. Pilots working at PSA Airlines, which operates 800 daily flights for American, will receive an additional 50 percent pay raise for two years. “The new PSA agreements will not only help PSA hire and retain quality pilots, but will set the standard for other regional carriers to follow suit,” John Ebbert, chair of the ALPA’s PSA pilot group, said in a statement. https://www.yahoo.com/news/american-airlines-ending-three-cities-165324971.html Japan Airlines eyes replacement of 767s, regional jets - executive DOHA (Reuters) - Japan Airlines (JAL) plans to make a decision in a year or two on the replacement of its ageing fleet of Boeing Co 767s and Embraer SA regional jets, a senior executive said on Tuesday. JAL will consider the 787 and Airbus SE A321neo families as possible replacements for its 767 fleet and the A220 and E2 models for regional jets, said Ross Leggett, the airline's head of route marketing, international relations and alliances. "We have got a fairly large 787 fleet, so whether it is an A321 that could then be used quite well within Asia as well, we really haven't looked at the full decision," he told Reuters on the sidelines of an airline industry gathering in Doha. JAL has 31 767s, 18 Embraer E-170s and 14 E-190s in its fleet, according to its website. Leggett said the airline had returned domestic capacity to 100% of pre-pandemic levels in May, though demand was running at about 85% to 95% of 2019 levels. In the international market, with China, South Korea and Taiwan effectively closed and Japan capping daily entry numbers, capacity is about 65% of pre-pandemic levels, he added. Domestic demand at rival ANA Holdings is about 80% of pre-pandemic levels, said Junichiro Miyagawa, ANA executive vice president in charge of alliances and international affairs. https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/japan-airlines-eyes-replacement-767s-070342890.html Position Available: Operational Specialist, FAA Command Center Warrenton, United States of America req1214 Employment Type: Permanent Contract Duration: N/A About the team you are joining Reporting to the Head of the IATA / FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Liaison Desk, the successful candidate will participate in the coordination of the daily operations of this organization.
