The Company has successfully achieved a 50% visual advantage in low visibility operations over the naked eye for its AerAware™ Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) on the Boeing B737NG aircraft, a first in commercial aviation1. AerSale developed AerAware under license with The Boeing Company which included access to necessary technical services, maintenance, and engineering data. Visual advantage is defined as the difference between what a pilot can see using an EFVS as compared to what can be seen with the naked eye. The 50% visual advantage breakthrough was achieved through a collaboration with Universal Avionics and Elbit Systems on AerSale’s AerAware STC. The system features the Elbit Systems / Universal Avionics ClearVision™ EVS-5000 multispectral camera and involved years of meticulous research, development, and extensive testing, underscoring AerSale and Universal Avionics’ unwavering commitment to improving aviation safety and reliability. The EVS-5000 multispectral camera used in the AerAware EFVS system employs advanced sensor technology and sophisticated image processing algorithms to deliver a clear, enhanced view of the external environment, including runways, terrain, and other aircraft, in all conditions and during all phases of flight. While there are a several key benefits to AerAware, safety stands as the cornerstone of the system, providing complete situational awareness under all circumstances and all phases of flight and extending beyond the challenges of low visibility operations. The system's fundamental enhancement lies in its ability to bolster safety and situational awareness consistently, rather than solely during inclement weather conditions. Key benefits of AerAware's Enhanced Flight Vision System: Enhanced Safety: With a 50% visual advantage, the EFVS substantially improves pilot situational awareness, reducing the risk of accidents in all conditions (and not just those where visibility is limited) during all phases of flight and reduces the dispatch minimums by 50%. Efficiency: Pilots can confidently land and take off in adverse conditions, leading to fewer delays and cancellations and ultimately saving time and resources. Cost Savings: AerAware minimizes the potential of delays or diversions therefore reducing the need for expensive alternate transportation/hotel arrangements when flights are impacted by adverse weather, ultimately benefiting both airlines and passengers. Environmental Impact: Enhanced route efficiency during adverse weather contributes to lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions, aligning with the aviation industry's commitment to sustainability and ESG. Nicolas Finazzo, AerSale’s Chief Executive Officer, said, "We are pleased to announce this significant achievement in aviation technology and safety. Our AerAware EFVS represents a game-changer for the industry, redefining what's possible in terms of flight safety and operational efficiency. This milestone could not have been achieved without the support and commitment of the talented teams at Elbit Systems / Universal Avionics and reflects our combined dedication and commitment to innovation and providing the most advanced solutions to our customers." While final approval by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the AerAware STC for the Boeing B737NG is pending, the 50% visual advantage milestone for the EFVS is poised to revolutionize aviation and set new standards for safety and efficiency. This is the first system approved by the FAA for a 50% visual advantage and the only system approved at 50%. About AerAware™ EFVS AerAware is an EFVS solution that enables commercial aircraft pilots to overcome degraded visibility situations day and night, allowing them to move in and out of airports faster, saving time and increasing operational efficiency and safety. The revolutionary system presents advanced imaging technology along with real-time aircraft primary flight systems data onto Elbit Systems/Universal Avionics SkyLens™ Head Wearable Displays in both the captain and first officer positions. SkyLens™ enables pilots to continuously operate heads-up and monitor primary flight information while retaining situational awareness of terrain. This groundbreaking EFVS incorporates multispectral ClearVision™ camera imaging, along with 3D synthetic vision, to provide unprecedented pilot situational awareness when operating AerAware-equipped aircraft in instrument conditions. With AerAware, instrument-approach visual references are revealed significantly earlier to pilots than with natural, out-of-window viewing. This enables pilots to descend below published natural vision instrument approach minimums. SUMMARY • Lufthansa Group is launching a recruitment campaign to hire over 2,000 new pilots by the end of 2025. • It is also targeted at young women who may want to become pilots. • The Lufthansa Group comprises several airlines with a diverse fleet, including Airbus and Boeing aircraft. • Lufthansa Group has announced the launch of its 'flybig' recruitment campaign, aimed at hiring more than 2,000 new pilots to meet its staffing needs until the end of 2025. This requirement has also arisen due to the introduction of new aircraft, including Airbus A320neo and A350 family planes, as well as Boeing 777X and 787s. Steering clear of clichés According to the group, the new recruitment campaign aims to steer “deftly clear of the usual clichés.” The company argued that today's pilots fly the aircraft and manage the crews and inflight hosts “all within an intriguing and truly global working environment.” As such, the campaign’s slogan is “Pilot – your dream job, just better.” Lufthansa Group wants to recruit cadets and already experienced pilots, with the announcement reading that a working position in the cockpit can be “readily tailored to a wide selection of life circumstances and situations.” In particular, the group aims the campaign at young women who may want to become pilots. However, the company emphasized that potential candidates “will need to show a keen team spirit and strong interpersonal talents,” with one of the campaign’s messages being that one of the critical instruments in the cockpit is your social skills. The group launched the initial ‘flybig’ campaign in early 2023, with further promotional waves coming in 2024. Summarizing, the group said that the campaign has two goals: to “sharpen the image of the pilot’s profession but raise applicant numbers.” As a result, the campaign will direct interested parties to apply to the career pages of the group’s carriers or the European Flight Academy (EFA), which the Lufthansa Group owns. Exploring Lufthansa Group’s order book The Lufthansa Group comprises several airlines, including subsidiaries all over Europe. This includes full-service airlines such as Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), as well as low-cost carriers or leisure airlines like Eurowings, Edelweiss, and Discover Airlines. There are also the small regional airlines, namely Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine, and the upcoming carrier City Airlines, which will begin flying in mid-2024. According to ch-aviation data, the group’s 10 airlines have 604 aircraft that are either active, in maintenance, or in storage. The cockpit types range from the Airbus A220, A320, A320neo, A330, A340, A350, A380 aircraft families to Boeing 747, 767 777, and 787 aircraft. Smaller aircraft, like the Embraer E-jets and Mitsubishi (ex-Bombardier) CRJ, are also present, excluding aircraft that are wet leased in or operated by Lufthansa Cargo. The latter has 15 aircraft, split between four Airbus A321 Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) and 11 Boeing 777Fs, four of which are now equipped with the AeroSHARK technology. The site’s data also showed that the 10 airlines have a total of 179 aircraft on order, excluding Lufthansa Cargo’s seven 777-8F orders. This includes Boeing 787s going to Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa, as well as 777Xs that are scheduled to be delivered to the latter. Several airlines within the group have also ordered A320neo family aircraft, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and SWISS. More than 40 Airbus A350s, including the A350-900 and A350-1000, are destined to be delivered to Lufthansa and SWISS, excluding the six Airbus A350-900s that Edelweiss will operate from mid-2024, which are second-hand aircraft from LATAM Airlines. In addition, the 179 aircraft include several aircraft that will be exchanging hands within the group. Such examples include an A330-300, registered as D-AIKG, that will be going from Lufthansa to Brussels Airlines, as well as a 787-9, registered as D-ABPB, that Austrian Airlines will take over from Lufthansa. City Airlines’ first Airbus A319, registered as D-ABGH, which Lufthansa CityLine now operates, is also included. Source: ch-aviation https://simpleflying.com/lufthansa-launches-campaign-to-hire-2000-new-pilots/ Spirit Airlines halts new pilot, flight attendant training after difficult quarter, Pratt engine issue • Spirit Airlines posted a third-quarter loss and forecast another for the last three months of 2023. • The carrier told pilots it will suspend new pilot and flight attendant training next month. • The budget airline reported softer demand and said it will have to ground dozens of planes due to a Pratt & Whitney engine manufacturing issue. Spirit Airlines will suspend training for new pilots and flight attendants next month “until further notice,” according to company memos, as it plans for slower growth amid softer demand and the expected grounding of dozens of aircraft for inspections because of a manufacturing problem with some Airbus planes’ engines. The company had already slowed hiring and captain upgrades, Greg Christopher, vice president of flight operations at Spirit, said Thursday in a memo to pilots, which was seen by CNBC. “With these recent developments, however, we will also be suspending all new-hire training efforts starting in November, until further notice.” The company told flight attendants that it will halt new flight attendant training starting Nov. 7 for the foreseeable future. It is also planning to offer voluntary time off for cabin crew members, according to a separate memo from Tina Milton, vice president of inflight experience. A Spirit spokesman confirmed the changes. “This is not a decision we’ve taken lightly, but it’s necessary to ensure our crew staffing levels match our operational need given the number of aircraft we can fly,” he said in a statement. The Miramar, Florida-based discount carrier said it expects to have to ground an average of 26 Airbus A320neo aircraft for inspections of engines made by RTX unit Pratt & Whitney after that company disclosed a manufacturing defect in August. The carrier said it expects 13 grounded planes in January, rising to 41 in December of next year. The airline had a fleet of 202 Airbus planes as of Sept. 30, according to a filing. “This expectation drives a dramatic decrease in the Company’s near-term growth projections,” Spirit said in a filing. It said it expects capacity to be flat to up mid-single digits next year compared with 2023. The airline is in talks with RTX about compensation for the issue. Last month, RTX said it expected repairs to take between 250 and 300 days, with an average of 350 planes powered by the geared turbofan engines grounded worldwide between 2024 and 2026. The budget airline Spirit on Thursday posted a net loss of $157.6 million, which was more than four times its loss a year ago. It forecast negative margins for the last three months of the year. “We continue to see discounted fares for travel booked through the pre-Thanksgiving period,” CEO Ted Christie said in an earnings release. “And, unfortunately, we have not seen the anticipated return to a normal demand and pricing environment for the peak holiday periods.” JetBlue Airways is in the process of trying to acquire Spirit, a deal the Justice Department has already sued to block. The trial is expected to begin next week in Boston. Frontier Airlines , a fellow discount carrier, continues to hire flight attendants, pilots, and mechanics, an airline spokeswoman said. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/27/spirit-airlines-suspends-new-pilot-training-after-tough-quarter-pratt-engine-issue.html CALENDAR OF EVENTS • NATA Aviation Business Conference - November 1-2, 2023 • CHC Safety & Quality Summit 2023: November 14 – 16, 2023 • 2024 ACSF Safety Symposium – Air Charter Safety Foundation - April 1-3, 2024 Curt Lewis
