Moran Introduces Legislation to Require all Aircraft in High-Volume Airspace to Use ADS-B Technology WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation, Space, and Innovation – recently introduced legislation to improve aviation safety by requiring all aircraft operating in Class B airspace to install and use Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) In and Out. Class B airspace is a designation for high-volume airspace typically around the nation’s busiest airports. Currently the Secretary of Transportation may grant exemptions to certain aircraft to fly without active ADS-B systems through congested airspace. This legislation would prohibit these exemptions from being granted, and would allow the Secretary of Transportation to mandate the installment of safety-critical ADS-B hardware on aircraft, leading to improved safety communication and accident prevention. “The tragic midair collision on January 29 and the two recent near misses at Reagan National Airport demonstrate an urgent need for improvements to aviation safety to make certain the airspace near some of our nation’s busiest airports are safe,” said Sen. Moran. “This legislation will make certain aircraft in airspace like DCA are transmitting and receiving important tracking data to both protect themselves and help air traffic control better conduct landings and takeoffs. The Army and the FAA must fully cooperate with the National Transportation Safety Board as they continue their investigations, and the flight restrictions around DCA must remain in place until all investigations are complete.” Following the midair collision near DCA on January 29th and the NTSB’s finding that the military helicopter involved was not transmitting ADS-B Out, the FAA announced a requirement – effective March 27th – that all aircraft flying in the Class B airspace around DCA turn on ADS-B Out. https://www.moran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?id=2544D35B-93DD-451F-BE67-FFC08F210110 Poland seizes tires for Boeing aircraft headed for Russia WARSAW (Reuters) -Polish customs seized 5 metric tons of tires for civilian Boeing aircraft which were due to transit through Belarus and Russia, the country's National Revenue Administration said on Monday, adding such goods are covered by European Union sanctions. Western sanctions against Russia have been toughened repeatedly since its full-scale invasion on Ukraine in 2022, without ending the war. "Officers... discovered during the inspection of a truck in Koroszczyn that the driver was transporting tires used in Boeing civil planes instead of the declared car and bus tires," the National Revenue Administration said. "The sender of the goods was a company from Spain, and the recipient was from Azerbaijan. Criminal fiscal proceedings were initiated in connection with customs fraud. The sanctioned goods were detained." https://www.globalbankingandfinance.com/UK-UKRAINE-CRISIS-POLAND-BOEING-c77ec390-b8ad-452d-a643-b135e52e33b6 Vietjet transfers 50 Boeing 737 aircraft to Vietjet Thailand Vietjet and Boeing have announced an agreement to transfer up to 50 Boeing 737 aircraft to Vietjet Thailand—marking a strategic initiative to strengthen aviation and tourism connectivity between Thailand, Vietnam, as well as other countries in the region. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra during the latter’s first official visit to Vietnam in over a decade. Under the agreement, Vietjet will allocate 50 aircraft from its existing order of 200 Boeing 737s to Vietjet Thailand. Etihad Airways, the UAE’s national airline, is set to grow its fleet with a new order for 28 wide-body Boeing aircraft. This move is part of the airline’s plan to double its size by 2030. The order includes Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft, all powered by GE engines. A services package is also part of the deal. The bulk order is reportedly valued at $14.5 billion. Etihad will welcome these new aircraft to its fleet starting in 2028. They will support the airline’s focus on greater connectivity, and improved efficiency. Since 2023, Etihad has steadily expanded its fleet to meet changing network and operational demands. The new aircraft will help the airline stay on track with its long-term goals. Antonoaldo Neves, Etihad’s CEO, shared insights on the decision. “This order shows our careful approach to fleet management. We’re expanding to match demand and our network plans. Since 2023, we’ve added aircraft consistently, and this step ensures we’re ready for the future,” he said. A Boost for Boeing Etihad’s order comes at a time when Boeing is experiencing a surge in demand for its widebody aircraft. Just days before, on May 14, 2025, Qatar Airways placed a record-breaking order for up to 210 widebody jets. This included 130 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 30 777-9s, with options for 50 more. Valued at approximately $96 billion, this deal was signed in the presence of U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Qatar’s Emir. It was received as a hopeful signal of Boeing’s market recovery. The Qatar order, which supports nearly 400,000 U.S. jobs, highlights the market confidence in Boeing’s widebody aircraft, a trend Etihad’s order further reinforces. Etihad Expansion Strategy to 2035 Etihad is also working on a detailed strategy that will guide the airline through 2035. The new Boeing aircraft will play a key role in this roadmap. They will help Etihad deliver exceptional customer experiences while staying financially sustainable. Neves highlighted the bigger picture. “This fleet expansion supports Abu Dhabi’s investment in aviation. It drives connectivity, tourism, and trade. Etihad’s growth creates economic opportunities for the UAE and beyond,” he added. With this order, Etihad Airways strengthens its position as a global aviation leader. The airline is building a modern, efficient fleet to meet the needs of travelers while supporting the UAE’s economic vision. By 2030, Etihad aims to connect more people and places, delivering world-class service along the way. https://aviationsourcenews.com/etihad-airways-places-order-for-28-boeing-widebody-aircraft/#google_vignette Nominations for ISASI - Jerry Lederer Award - Please submit before May 30 Please consider nominating someone who you know is deserving of the Jerry Lederer Award: any member of ISASI may submit a nomination.
