The aircraft subsequently collided with an unknown object. The aircraft climbed to FL100, the crew decided to divert to Hanover (Germany) where the aircraft landed safely on runway 27R about one hour after the go around. The aircraft sustained minor damage. At the time a number of Ukrainian freight aircraft had been parking at the apron, when a suspicious drone was found near the aircraft, the airport was closed causing D-ALEU and subsequent to go around. Climbing through about 1300 feet the aircraft collided with an unknown object. Police dispatched specialists to defuse a possible explosive charge. Police (LKA) later reported that the drone was indeed carrying an unknown detonation device. State Security was called in. The device has been defused in the meantime. NATO reported a drone carrying explosives was found in Leipzig. A DHL aircraft collided with another drone on go around. DHL reported a possible incident at Leipzig. https://avherald.com/h?article=53cc9c81&opt=0 Accident: India A20N enroute on Aug 4th 2026, severe turbulence injures 17 people An Air India Airbus A320-200N, registration VT-EXO performing flight AI-2379 from Phuket (Thailand) to Delhi (India) with 137 passengers and 8 crew, was enroute at FL360 near position N21.33 E84.90 when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence causing altitude deviations of +175 feet followed by -250 feet before returning onto FL360 at about 09:33L (04:03Z). The aircraft continued to Delhi, where the aircraft landed without further incident about 90 minutes later. 13 passengers and 4 crew needed medical assistance. The airline reported 13 passengers and 4 cabin crew received injuries. India's Civil Aviation Ministry reported 8 passengers and 4 cabin crew were admitted to hospitals, all of them in stable condition. Reportedly the flight crew declared an emergency at 13:00. The aircraft crashed about 12 km from the Nazca Lines site. The crew immediately initiated emergency response and the situation on site was quickly brought under control. A medevac flight crashed into a mountain near Sierra Blanca Regional Airport after experiencing GPS jamming activities by the U.S. military during its final approach. A medevac flight from Roswell Air Center (ROW), New Mexico, to Sierra Blanca Regional Airport (SRR) crossed into an area where there were "GPS jamming activities" by the U.S. military — minutes later, it crashed into a mountain as it was on final approach to its destination. According to the NTSB's Preliminary Report [PDF], the crew, alongside several other aircraft, experienced issues with their navigation system consistent with the effects of GPS jamming, as reported by Wired. While the GPS interference seemingly did not directly cause the crash, it's apparent that it was the first domino in a chain of events that led to the fatal accident. This raises urgent questions about GPS jamming as reported incidents of GPS interference mount across the world. An uneventful departure The preliminary report said that it was a dark, moonless night, meaning it would be difficult for anyone to fly visually. That's because the dark sky and ground would make it difficult to locate the horizon and could quickly lead to spatial disorientation. The twin-engine Beechcraft King Air propeller plane took off from its base at Roswell Air Center (ROW), New Mexico, at around 11:52 pm. As it was climbing to altitude at 11:54 pm, the pilots requested and received an instrument flight rules (IFR) clearance from Albuquerque Center, the air route traffic control center in charge of the area. This switch meant that the pilots would now primarily fly the plane using instruments in the cockpit instead of looking outside the windows. This is a normal procedure and is what most passenger airliners use during operations. Furthermore, it seems that the pilots have filed for clearance before they took off, as evidenced by their "as filed" clearance to SRR. First sign of trouble At around 12 midnight, Albuquerque Center told the flight crew that they were 1,000 feet above their assigned altitude. The pilots then said they were correcting their altitude, but they also mentioned that they've lost GPS capability. From there, they asked for a heading, and they were told to proceed to heading 275 towards SRR. About a minute after this, air traffic control (ATC) told them to proceed to heading 350 to set them up for a landing on runway 24 at SRR. Around five minutes after this radio communication, ATC called the military and asked them to stop their GPS jamming activities in the meantime. At 12:07 am, the NTSB said that the Beechcraft's GPS instruments resumed regular recording. The pilots then called Albuquerque Center a minute after this, saying that they had "a visual on Ruidoso," the town nearest to SRR, and that they were transitioning to visual flight rules (VFR). This meant that they were moving away from the direct control of the ATC and would navigate and fly using visual cues. As the pilots turned towards their final destination, they had a recorded altitude of 9,820 feet on their instruments. But what the pilots couldn't see was that the Capitan Mountains, which rise to more than 10,000 feet, stood between them and SRR. The conditions meant that there was no available illumination to light the ground. It is still unknown what happened next or what the pilots saw (or didn't see), but the preliminary report says the last recorded information saw the plane climbing from 9,400 feet to 9,823 feet at a ground speed of 150 knots (172 mph). It impacted terrain at about 9,950 feet — some 230 feet below the Capitan Mountains Summit Radio Facility. Visual illusion compounded by a high-stress situation Although the weather was clear at the time of the accident, the fact that it was a dark night meant that the pilots were more susceptible to visual illusions. As the aircraft descended, they were likely using the lights of Ruidoso to guide them toward SRR. Because they could not see that the Capitan Mountains were still between them and their destination, they likely started their descent too early. As soon as the aircraft went below the peak, they would've lost visual with the town, and it seemed that the pilots attempted to climb when they realized that there was a massive obstacle in front of them. Unfortunately, it seems that their efforts were too late, especially at their speeds, resulting in a controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accident. This was compounded by a high workload and high-stress situation. Landings and take-offs, in normal situations, are already quite hectic in the cockpit, which is why pilots practice the sterile cockpit rule, which avoids extraneous communications, at times like these. The loss of GPS signals also added to their stress, as they initially planned for an RNAV approach towards SRR. While this generally uses a combination of radio signals, it seems that their system primarily relied on GPS, which was inoperative at that time. Aside from this, ATC also had a higher workload than usual, as they were assisting three other aircraft in the area that have been affected by the military operations. Although the military had temporarily ceased their activities, it seems that the pilots were not aware of this and elected to proceed visually instead of relying on either RNAV or the alternative instrument landing system (ILS). We still don't have the NTSB's final report, so we cannot definitely say what the ultimate cause of the crash. But it seems that if the military wasn't running a GPS jamming exercise at that time, the flight would have used RNAV from departure all the way to SRR, instead of relying on radar vectors and, ultimately, VFR. Military activities affecting civilian flights This isn't the first time that military activities have been linked to a crash in the U.S in recent history. Just last year, a tragedy unfolded at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when a regional jet carrying 64 passengers and crew collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter on an exercise, resulting in 67 casualties. GPS jamming is also a frequent occurrence in several hotspots in the world, like Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and even the South China Sea, which has affected airliners. But aside from civilian airliners, many drones, especially those used for long-range attacks, also use GPS. While militaries have been developing new technologies like microwaves and lasers to shoot down these drones, one of the most cost-effective technologies that is readily available today is GPS jamming. It's probably because of this that Russia has started putting magnetic compasses on some of their drones to help with navigation. Even though GPS jamming might sound alarming, pilots have been flying around the world for decades, even before it came into widespread use. These include VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) beacons that send out signals unaffected by GPS jamming to help pilots determine where they are, ILS, which safely guides pilots towards a runway up to a certain distance, and more. However, it seems that the sudden loss of GPS caught the pilots of the Beechcraft unaware. This, combined with the lack of visual references, a sudden change of plans from RNAV to ILS approach, and the decision to fly visually, probably led to the crash. The military's GPS jamming exercise didn't directly cause the crash, but it was likely the first event in the "Swiss cheese" model that ultimately caused the accident. https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/us-military-gps-jamming-exercise-120016059.html General Aviation Pilots Warned of Flight Hazards Near Mount Rainier The FAA is warning pilots who fly near Mount Rainier National Park in Washington of potential “hazardous operations.” According to a notice from the FAA Safety Team, pilots flying near the south side of the park, specifically those flying low along the Nisqually River between Ashford and Longmire, need to be aware of Kautz Creek Helibase (7WA7), which supports National Park Service aviation operations for Mount Rainier National Park. According to FAA officials, the site is routinely used for search and rescue missions, short-haul operations, external load, and emergency response activities. These material samples are attached to selected areas on the sides of the fuselage, as well as on the inside and outside of the engine cowlings. Their performance will be analysed over the next few months during regular flight operations between Munich and Hamburg and is expected to provide insights for the further development of the AeroSHARK technology. The long-term goal is to tap into additional efficiency potential in flight operations through the broader use of AeroSHARK, thereby contributing to greater sustainability in air travel. For passengers aboard the Lufthansa City Airlines aircraft, the test remains virtually invisible. The material is transparent and hardly noticeable to the eye. Flight operations also remain unchanged. For informational purposes, a welcome panel featuring the AeroSHARK design at the aircraft’s entrance draws the attention of interested travellers to the test. With the test run that has now begun, various new AeroSHARK material samples are being evaluated under real-world conditions. The 70 test patches differ in terms of their material and layer composition. The goal of the study is to identify the material that combines the highest durability with easy application, straightforward cleaning, and residue-free removal. As well as shielding passengers from fossil fuel price shocks, they produce less air and noise pollution, and could connect remote areas often overlooked by major jet-liner operators. Which European flight routes could go electric? European start-ups are racing to build electric aircraft that could travel distances of up to 500 kilometres. That would make them capable of serving a quarter of Europe’s flight routes, according to analysis by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) – including some of the continent’s most popular. Potential routes that fall within the 500km range include London to Dublin, Athens to Santorini, Barcelona to Ibiza, Nice to Corsica, and Rome to Sardinia. While France has taken aim at short-haul flights by banning routes where a train alternative takes less than 2.5 hours, and Spain has proposed a similar ban, routes like these – serving islands or crossing water – could not realistically be replaced by rail. Electric aircraft could help cut emissions on journeys like these, where flying is likely to remain one of the only practical options. German start-up Vaeridion estimates its electric aircraft could eventually operate at under €0.50 per passenger-kilometre, comparable to a first-class rail fare. Future ticket prices would also depend on airport charges, taxes and airline pricing strategies Vaeridion is building a nine-seat electric aircraft, which it plans to be cleared to carry passengers by 2030. The company has secured commitments from airlines and jet operators to buy 100 aircraft. The small size of first-generation electric aircraft means they’re unlikely to compete with commercial jets, and rather than immediately serving mainstream short-haul routes would initially be used to connect rural regions that are not connected by mainstream flights. How far from reality are commercial electric flights? Battery weight long made electric aviation impractical, but rapid technological advancements are helping to tackle this problem. Advances in electric motors, battery integration and aircraft design have significantly improved the outlook for electric aviation. But battery energy density is still dictating the weight, size and range of fully electric aircraft. Although major players have been lagging on electric flight developments, with Airbus recently delaying the development of its zero-emission aircraft, European innovators are filling the gap. Stringent climate policies, shorter regional routes and a dense network of smaller airports make Europe the perfect test ground for battery-powered aircraft. Partnering with KLM, Dutch aerospace company Elysian Aircraft is developing a large-scale battery-electric aircraft, designed to carry 90 people over distances of up to 1,000km as early as 2035. French start-up Aura Aero, meanwhile, is developing a 19-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft with a range of up to 1,500km. It aims to gain certification in late 2029 and plans to eventually scale up to produce aircraft with 40 to 90 seats. “Being hybrid will help our aircraft go further, but it still cuts emissions by up to 80 per cent – and it can easily use sustainable aviation fuel [SAF] rather than conventional jet fuel,” says Antoine Toulemont, the company’s European affairs advisor. “Even at today’s fuel prices, we estimate a 50 per cent reduction in direct operating costs.” Are electric flights a green travel choice? Although SAF is expected to play an important role in decarbonising long-distance flying by reducing reliance on conventional jet fuel, supplies remain limited and experts have questioned the sustainability claims of producers. Many argue that truly sustainable supplies are unlikely to be available in quantities large enough to meet aviation’s continued growth, making direct electrification a greener option. But even this comes with caveats: while battery-electric aircraft eliminate in-flight fuel use, their overall climate impact still depends on how the electricity used to charge them is generated and the emissions associated with manufacturing batteries and other parts. "Electric flight will be an essential part of a low-carbon world of travel, especially when it comes to decarbonising the routes such as London-Dublin, which can’t easily be replaced by other means," says Anna Hughes, director of campaign group Flight Free UK. "But we need to keep one eye on reality: this type of flight is only zero carbon when powered by renewables." With energy demand set to rise in line with electrification, Hughes warns that "non essential activities such as flying" should not be prioritised over essentials such as home heating and food production. "The reality of decarbonising travel will inevitably be travelling a lot less, investing heavily in rail, and only then electrifying the flights that remain," she adds. It will help ensure aviation continues to boost connectivity, travel, trade, tourism, integration, and sustainable development.” Opening on 27 July 2026, AFI Aviation Week was convened by ICAO and hosted in Cairo by the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Throughout the week, delegates reviewed aviation performance across the AFI Region and identified implementation priorities. This included focused talks on the implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market, strengthening institutional capacity, mobilizing sustainable financing, and developing a coordinated African position ahead of ICAO's Seventh Worldwide Air Transport Conference to be held this November in Montréal. Sun Country is losing junior pilots to the dominant carrier in its home market at a rate that has forced the airline to cut passenger flying, parent company Allegiant acknowledged Tuesday. Speaking during Allegiant’s second-quarter earnings call, CEO Greg Anderson said the elevated attrition is concentrated among Sun Country pilots based in Minneapolis/St. Paul. The “vast majority” of those leaving joined the airline within the past three years, he said. According to Anderson, the pilots are moving to the “largest full-service carrier in MSP” after that airline increased hiring by “maybe double or more.” He stopped short of naming Delta during the call, which is the airport’s largest airline. The comments represent Allegiant’s most detailed public explanation yet of the staffing woes at Sun Country, which Allegiant acquired in May. “In general … we have a number of pilots across both airlines that ultimately, it’s a small number—but ultimately, they want to work for a full-service carrier,” Anderson said. In a statement provided to AirlineGeeks last month, the company attributed its fall schedule reductions to seasonal demand, higher-than-expected cargo flying, and an expanded pilot pathway program that required experienced pilots to become instructors. But an internal memo obtained by AirlineGeeks offered a more direct explanation. In the July 3 message, Anderson told employees the cuts were caused by “higher-than-expected front-line crew attrition combined with increased cargo flying.” Sun Country subsequently removed roughly 348 September departures, equal to about one-third of its previously planned flying for the month. Seven routes were suspended, while several others received significant frequency reductions. During Tuesday’s call, Anderson confirmed that the attrition and schedule reductions extend beyond a routine seasonal adjustment. (Photo: AirlineGeeks | Katie Zera) “Over the past few months, Sun Country has experienced elevated pilot attrition, concentrated among its junior MSP pilots and largely driven by increased hiring at the largest carrier in the Twin Cities,” he said. “In response to this attrition and elevated fuel prices, we are reducing off-peak capacity in the Twin Cities during the back half of the year,” Anderson added. Cargo Flying Although Anderson described the number of departing pilots across Allegiant and Sun Country as relatively small, the operational impact at Sun Country has been substantial enough to reshape its schedule. The airline’s growing cargo operation compounds the problem. Sun Country generated a record $50.6 million in cargo revenue during the second quarter and recently added two more aircraft to its Amazon flying. Allegiant executives said the cargo operation is less efficient on a crew-hour basis during the expansion period and typically draws pilots away from scheduled passenger service. “As a reminder, at standalone Sun Country and in the current state of integration, cargo flying is less efficient on a crew-hour basis and will typically draw from scheduled service resources during the ramp-up period as additional aircraft enter the cargo program,” Chief Commercial Officer Drew Wells said. The company expects cargo revenue to increase slightly again in the third quarter. Combined scheduled-service capacity at Allegiant and Sun Country is expected to fall approximately 5.5% year over year during the quarter. Executives said Sun Country’s reductions are tied specifically to pilot attrition, increased cargo flying, elevated fuel prices, and broader cuts to off-peak capacity. “Sun Country additionally pulled down the September capacity in response to elevated pilot attrition and the planned increases in cargo flying,” Wells said. The staffing problem is emerging during the early stages of Allegiant’s integration of Sun Country. Allegiant completed the acquisition on May 13, meaning Sun Country’s results were included in the combined company’s financial statements for only part of the second quarter. The two airlines continue to operate under separate certificates, pilot groups, and labor agreements. Allegiant submitted a transition plan to the Federal Aviation Administration and is targeting approval of a single operating certificate during the first half of 2028. Executives repeatedly emphasized that maintaining stability at both airlines is the company’s immediate priority. “First and foremost, stability above all,” Anderson said during the call. “Both airlines are performing well operationally and financially.” But the pilot situation also highlights the different labor environments facing the two carriers. Legacy Allegiant pilots recently ratified a new collective bargaining agreement, with nearly 80% voting in favor. The deal includes improvements to pay, benefits, quality of life, and scheduling, along with the payout of an approximately $275 million retention bonus that the company had been accruing since 2023. “We’re very happy to have a deal ratified by our pilots,” Anderson said. “It improves pay, benefits, [and] quality of life.” Sun Country pilots, meanwhile, remain covered by a separate agreement that became amendable in December 2025. The airline’s approximately 670 pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association. The union previously called the spike in departures “deeply concerning” and urged management to address its underlying causes rather than rely on a short-term response. Anderson said the airline’s training classes are full and that the supply of qualified applicants remains strong. The company has expanded training in preparation for 2027, with newly hired pilots expected to enter service later this year. “Our schoolhouse is full,” Anderson said. “It’s full on the Sun Country side. We have multiple classes.” “The number of applications for candidates, cadets, and pilots is off the charts—very highly qualified—and they value what we offer,” he added. Allegiant expects to restore growth in Minneapolis in 2027 using a combination of Sun Country- and Allegiant-operated flights. Executives specifically pointed to March 2027 as the period when they want staffing and flying positioned for recovery. “We’re confident we’ll manage through it,” Anderson said. “It’s a headwind in the near term.” Still, he stopped short of declaring that attrition has peaked. “The recent trends over the past couple of weeks have been encouraging, but we’re planning for the worst,” he said. “We’re going to continue to hire and try and get ahead of it as quickly as we can.” Anderson added that attrition remains “out of our control to a degree.” https://airlinegeeks.com/2026/08/05/rival-hiring-surge-drains-sun-country-pilot-ranks/ Bozeman company develops tech to help pilots operate when navigation systems fail BOZEMAN, Mont. — A Bozeman aerospace company is developing new artificial intelligence technology for the U.S. military. Research focuses on strengthening aviation safety and helping ensure aircraft can operate effectively in GPS-contested areas. Volair Technologies Incorporated is developing AI-enabled navigation technology designed to help aircraft operate safely when GPS and traditional radio navigation systems fail. “Enemies are going to degrade our ability to navigate and communicate using existing matured capabilities, including GPS, and so getting ahead of, you know, that challenge is really (a) huge amount of military technology development,” said Eric Muir, founder and CEO for VTI Aerospace. He says the challenge is helping pilots navigate and land safely near airfields without relying on GPS or ground-based radio aids. Experts believe the technology could improve the resilience and safety of future military aviation missions. “When you have an incident where the GPS is jammed or degraded and we're starting to see more of this in modern military conflict, it really falls back on trend to pilots today to be able to navigate and execute the mission, and so as we look forward to future aircraft and military platforms that you know are driving towards less reliance on humans, we need to bring that resilience into software and be able to enable the aircraft to execute a mission and navigate without reliance on GPS,” Muir said. This project is intended to support both crewed and uncrewed aircraft operating in contested environments where traditional navigation systems may be disrupted, like a dead zone. VTI’s new sensor tech will be installed on aircraft particularly for landing and takeoff phases of flight “We bring sensors onto the aircraft to act like human eyesight and allow those sensors to provide the necessary navigation for the aircraft to take off and land and that could be at a regular airport runway, could also be at an austere location like a dirt landing strip or a stretch of highway, and it will allow kind of future military mission profiles without that reliance on GPS,” Muir said.
