The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. on Sept. 6. The Amazon Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-33A operated by 21 Air LLC, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and overran the runway, leaving a crash path of 1,300 feet beyond the paved runway in a scene described as "utter devastation" by National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy. Five people were killed, all occupants of two vehicles, a van owned by a contract cleaning company for airlines and another vehicle, according to Homendy. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said five others were taken to hospitals, including two pilots on board the plane who were treated and have since been released. During a news conference Sept. 8, NTSB investigator Chihoon Shin said flight data showed the aircraft's nose landing gear and right main landing gear touched down about 30 seconds before the recording ended. The left main landing gear touched down about 19 seconds before the end of the recording. Then a few seconds later, the brakes were released and the throttles were increased to "values consistent with go-around thrust," according to Shin. He added that there was no indication in the recorded data that speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed. "When we analyze the full list of parameters, we'll have a better idea of the aircraft performance during this landing. Was it normal? Was it not? And what was working and what was not?" Shin said. NTSB investigators to interview pilots of Amazon Prime Air cargo plane Homendy said investigators plan to interview both pilots on Sept. 9 before releasing a summary of the cockpit voice recorder, which captured more than two hours of audio. The flight data recorder contained about 55 hours of data and recorded more than 400 aircraft parameters. "We want to hear their account of the accident before we release a readout of the cockpit voice recorder," Homendy said during the news conference. The NTSB also released information on the pilots' experience. Earlier on Sept. 8, local authorities identified the pilots as First Officer Jaime Felipe Silva Molina, 37, and Capt. Joseph Carol, 55. According to Class 1 medical records cited by Homendy, Carol had logged 7,145 flight hours as of March, while Molina had logged 2,655 hours as of August. The deceased are: Rolando Aleman Leon, 55 Yoel Rodriguez Narajo, 53 Julio C. Pineda, 75 Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53 Javierk Reyes Quevedo, 47 Those injured in the crash are: Eugenio Corredor, 79, occupant of sedan Ridoel Averhoff Diaz, 32, occupant of van Roosevelt Sebastian Perdomo Torres, 36, occupant of van Molina was released with minor injuries Carol was released with minor injuries Three victims remain hospitalized, including two in critical condition and one who is stable, Cordero-Stutz said. The van was a 2012 Ford Econoline owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., which was carrying seven employees. It was inside airport property at the time of the crash. The other vehicle hit was a Toyota Corolla Cross, which was traveling outside of the airport's perimeter fence. Homendy said investigators spent Sept. 8 documenting the crash scene, measuring runway and tire marks, collecting debris and examining the aircraft. The aircraft departed with a takeoff weight of 252,182 pounds and was expected to land at 231,236 pounds, according to Homendy. The plane's cargo weighed 32,222 pounds and consisted primarily of contact lenses. Investigators said no hazardous materials were aboard. The cargo plane was on its third flight of the day, Homendy previously said. It had flown from Cincinnati to Miami, and from Miami to San Juan, earlier on Sept. 6 before the crash. More than 60 rescue units and about 200 emergency personnel responded to the crash, working to free trapped occupants of the vehicles and plane, as airplane fuel leaked for hours. The plane was also engulfed in flames. The incident prompted the airport to close two of its four runways. Though the airport stopped all flights immediately after the crash, flights had resumed by the evening of Sept. 6. London Heathrow recorded 476 flight cancellations and 304 delays as of Tuesday night, announcing around 9 p.m. local time it was suspending arrivals for the remainder of Tuesday. Manchester Airport said after the air traffic issue was resolved it expected disruptions to continue for the rest of the day, noting it "may be busier" Wednesday due to rescheduled flights. London Stansted echoed concerns of continued disruptions despite the fix. What We Don't Know What exactly caused the disruption. Martin Rolfe, the chief executive of National Air Traffic Services, told the BBC his agency has launched a full investigation into the matter. Chief Critic Ryanair chief operating officer Neal McMahon called for Rolfe's resignation Tuesday, according to The Telegraph, saying National Air Traffic Services was "not fit for purpose" and the agency "should not repeatedly bring the aviation system to a standstill." Rolfe did not tell the BBC whether he would resign or not, insisting he was focused on the issues experienced Tuesday and the investigation into them. Key Background National Air Traffic Services also experienced technical issues last summer, when a radar glitch lasted for roughly four hours and resulted in over 120 canceled flights. Flight disruptions continued hours after the issue was resolved, with the U.K. Department of Transportation launching an investigation into the radar system failure. Investigators are currently analysing the Boeing 767’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder to try and establish why the jet overran the runway while landing on Sunday. Five people on the ground died, and another five were injured. According to the NTSB, flight data seems to show the throttle increased to levels consistent with the manoeuvre about 15 seconds before recordings ended. They are also looking at the key braking system which appears not to have deployed. At a press briefing Tuesday night, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorders, which she said contains 2 hours of good-quality audio, and the flight data recorder, which she said contains 55 hours' worth of data. Investigators have already combed through some of the data, which indicated that the plane was coming in for landing, but that several seconds before the recording ends, throttles increased consistent with a "go-around thrust," NTSB investigator Chihoon Shin said. Buying CPP, the world's third-largest maker ‌of the metallic components needed for engine turbine blades, is the latest step in a years-long effort to strengthen aerospace supply chains. GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp, announcing his largest acquisition since turning round and splitting industrial giant General Electric, called the capacity "mission-critical". The deal illustrates a shift from winning new orders to production strategy in the overstretched aerospace industry, whose biggest challenge is delivering on seven- to10-year order books. CASTINGS CHOKEPOINT SINCE COVID TIMES Castings — parts made from liquid metal that are difficult to mass-produce — and forgings, which are made from solid metal and just as hard to make, have been one of the industry's ⁠most intractable chokepoints since the COVID-19 pandemic. GE's competitors are also seeking to address the issue. Based on age-old techniques involving wax replicas — and relying on avant-garde technology to withstand temperatures above their melting point — turbine blades stand at the pinnacle of costly aerospace manufacturing, according to analysts. They have also been at the centre of wider production snags, fuelling tensions between the engine industry and airlines. Decades of investment and specialist knowledge have made the handful of players difficult to imitate and kept prices high. "It's the black art of manufacturing, which has always been a huge barrier," said AeroDynamic Advisory Managing Director Kevin Michaels. "It is the hardest thing to do...You might have to throw away half or more of what you make." CPP is one of four major global suppliers for such castings and supplies a quarter of GE's needs, according to Jefferies. Deals like GE's are not without risk. They include scaring away rivals who also buy from CPP, or losing favour with large suppliers such as Howmet with which GE also does business.
